BOTCH SIGNS TO SARGENT HOUSE AND RE-RELEASE ENTIRE DIGITAL CATALOG TO DSPS

Legendary Tacoma, Washington mathcore/hardcore/metal band Botch have announced they’ve signed with Los Angeles label/management company Sargent House, home to artists like Deafheaven, Chelsea Wolfe, Russian Circles, Emma Ruth Rundle, Lingua Ignota, The Armed among others. Bassist Brian Cook, guitarist Dave Knudson, drummer Tim Latona and vocalist Dave Verellen formed Botch in 1993, becoming one of the most ground-breaking and influential bands during a pivotal shift in heavy music before splitting in 2002. Their split made way for members to form and or to play in other highly notable and influential bands including Minus the Bear, These Arms Are Snakes, Narrows, SUMAC and current Sargent House bands Russian Circles and Torment & Glory..

In conjunction with the signing, Botch have re-released their entire digital catalog, including two studio albums (We Are the Romans, American Nervoso), an EP (An Anthology of Dead Ends), live album (061502), and a compilation album (Unifying Themes Redux). More news from Botch including vinyl re-issues to come in 2022.

 The band notes:

“We're continuously humbled by the ongoing interest in our band despite the fact that we've been broken up for nearly two decades. With the folding of Hydra Head Records in 2020, we were presented with the dilemma of figuring out how to keep the catalog available to both newly initiated and longtime fans. We were lucky to have the support of Sargent House, who are helping keep Botch's legacy alive by administering the digital catalog, curating the band's archive of photos and paraphernalia, and getting our records in the ridiculously long queues of vinyl pressing plants. We're happy to be part of the Sargent House family, excited to have our music back up online, and looking forward to exciting things in 2022.”

THE ARMED RELEASE FIRST OFFICIAL VIDEO FROM ULTRAPOP: LIVE AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE. WATCH THE PERFORMANCE OF “WHERE MAN KNOWS WANT”

In anticipation of their debut feature film — ULTRAPOP: Live At The Masonic Temple — due in October, The Armed have released an excerpt performance for “Where Man Know Want,” a feature track taken from their most recent album, ULTRAPOP. Filmed in the Tudor Room on the third floor of the Temple — the setting features beautiful chandeliers, incredible woodwork and meticulous hand craftsmanship — all of which is nearly impossible to see, as seven members of The Armed converge on a light-up floor amidst dense fog and a pulsating light show. The band evokes Tin Machine or early 90’s Lou Reed via matching steel Steinberger guitars and vintage Simmons drums and the performance concludes in such hysterics that viewers will instinctively want to stand near the back of the room.

Directed by Tony Wolski and presented by Sargent House ULTRAPOP: Live At The Masonic Temple the film is Part “Lemonade,” part “Live at Pompeii” and fully infused with a sense of Lynchian dread. Live performance and story-driven narrative melt seamlessly into one another, as the film confronts themes of identity, information warfare, the commoditization of artistic product, and commodification of the artist. The film also definitively shines a light on The Armed’s often-mysterious, collaborative structure—revealing an ever-changing lineup over the course of its runtime. The project is a stunningly-filmed cinematic document of live performances taking place within the opulent chapels, imposing asylum rooms, full-size indoor handball courts, halls (and more) of the mysterious Masonic Temple of Detroit; a 550,000 square foot fortress in the heart of the city.

Digital screenings will start 10/15, with a special in-person screening event happening the same day at Detroit’s El Club. Check here for full screening schedule.

BLOODMOON: CHELSEA WOLFE, BEN CHISHOLM, STEPHEN BRODSKY NEW ALBUM WITH CONVERGE

Bloodmoon: I is the new collaborative album created by the legendary hardcore band Converge alongside dark songstress Chelsea Wolfe, her bandmate/writing partner Ben Chisholm, and Cave In vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky. Bloodmoon: I is out November 19 on CD/Digital via Epitaph Records and on vinyl June 24 via Deathwish.

The collaboration first began in 2016 at Roadburn festival in The Netherlands where the seven-piece performed revamped Converge material under the name Blood Moon. The energy and rapturously received appearance inspired the group to want to make music together, though it would take several years before their schedules allowed. In late 2019, they were finally able to begin working on new material together at Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou’s God City Studio in Salem, Massachusetts. Future sessions were planned for 2020 but the pandemic would see the remainder of the record be finished remotely.

Produced by Ballou, Bloodmoon: I is a harrowing and atmospheric collaborative effort that sees each performer working together and outside the comfort zones in order to create something that is truly unique to the project. “I feel like everyone just kept the music in mind and wanted to do what’s best for the song,” notes Brodsky.

“The project stretched my vocals in new ways. It’s so different than what I normally sing over that I was able to open up and be vulnerable with my vocals,” says Chelsea Wolfe. “Our dynamics are pushing and pulling in all different directions on this record, and I find that to be creatively rewarding,” adds Bannon.

CHELSEA WOLFE RELEASES BIRTH OF VIOLENCE TOUR DOCUMENTARY

Chelsea Wolfe has shared an official documentary of her 2019 Birth of Violence Tour which unfortunately came to a halt with the onset of the pandemic. The piece is beautifully shot by photographer/director Bobby Cochran who joined Wolfe at the tail end of the North American leg. Cochran documents the show, stage, and captures moments behind the scenes. The two also sat down to discuss the creation of the album, Birth of Violence, about what it’s like being on tour and her rituals.

Wolfe tells, “It’s not my natural inclination to want cameras around when I’m in my head or doing vocal warmups before a show, or when I’m with friends or family backstage, but Bobby asked, and in the spirit of pushing myself to document that era of my musical life, I welcomed him along. Then, after the COVID-19 pandemic hit and I had to fly home from the European acoustic tour before I got to play a single show of it, I was so grateful that he had this footage and was putting it together. I wanted to share this documentary for that reason as well, for those who had tickets to cancelled shows (I love you!), and as a sort of wave goodbye to the time I spent focused on ‘Birth of Violence’, as I’m now making plans for and in the headspace of the next new album.”

CHELSEA WOLFE SHARES “WOODSTOCK” (JONI MITCHELL COVER) & “GREEN ALTAR

Chelsea Wolfe has revealed two unreleased songs from her Birth of Violence sessions during which she masterfully returned to her folk roots. Her stunning spin on Joni Mitchell’s eminent single, “Woodstock” and the never before heard, “Green Altar” display Wolfe’s experimental approach as she deliberately ties together her discoveries in rich textures and haunting melodies.

Wolfe recounts, “While preparing for the Birth of Violence tour, I was watching a lot of Joni Mitchell videos. A 1966 Canadian performance that I found of hers ended up inspiring the video for my song ‘Highway.’ One night after working on the live set, Ben and I were hanging out and I was just letting the Joni videos roll.. ‘Woodstock’ came on and I started singing along. After that I simply asked Ben if he’d be into covering it with me for the tour, and we just went back into the studio and started working it out. The cover came together quite naturally and it was a treat to play on stage every night. Joni is obviously such a big inspiration to this side of my music, so it felt right to pay tribute to her.”

“‘Green Altar’ is a cherished song that unfortunately didn’t make it onto the album. It’s a love song I wrote after finding out that my dear friends (artist) Bill Crisafi and (designer) Hogan McLaughlin were engaged. I envisioned them getting married in a lush, green outdoor space outside of some majestic castle ruins.”
