BOTCH WERE LARGER THAN LIFE AT THEIR NYC REUNION SHOWS - BROOKLYN VEGAN

It seems like nearly every band eventually reunites, but the Botch reunion is one that a lot of us thought would never happen. Even after they released their first new song in over 20 years–which guitarist David Knudson says came together unexpectedly and organically–there was still some hesitance to actually play shows. Finally, they tested the waters with a surprise set at longtime producer Matt Bayles’ birthday party in October of 2022, and then played their first proper show since 2002 four months later. This past weekend, they brought their hugely-anticipated reunion tour to NYC for two shows: Friday (11/10) and Saturday (11/11) at Webster Hall.

Whatever hesitance may have existed at one point was clearly shed by the time of this show; Dave Verellen, David Knudson, Brian Cook, and Tim Latona went as hard as you’d hope, sounded larger than life, and seemed genuinely over the moon about the opportunity to play to some of the biggest crowds of their career, two decades after they initially broke up. Brian’s bass tone was monstrous, Tim’s drumming was all power, David Knudson dished out his mathy riffage with all the intensity and precision he had back in the day, and Dave V still commands (and jumps into) the crowd like a natural-born hardcore frontperson. It’s really something how much sound and force they can make with just four people.

TREBLEZINE WRITES GLOWING REVIEW FOR DAVID EUGENE EDWARDS' 'HYACINTH'

David Eugene Edwards has never required amplification to create music that feels highly charged and coursing with an uncanny power. On his 1996 debut album with former band Sixteen Horsepower, Sackcloth ‘n’ Ashes, the Colorado-born singer/songwriter merged disparate aesthetics of The Gun Club and old-time Americana, crafting haunted Old Testament dirges through primarily acoustic instruments like banjo and bandoneon. Even with the volume cranked and the fuzz enhanced on albums like Low Estate or much of his tempestuous work with Wovenhand, Edwards is always the most intense element of the music he makes, a figure who speaks through spiritual imagery and the voice of a soothsayer. To hear his music is to feel its impact.

Hyacinth only seems to amplify that intensity, even as Edwards returns anew to a primarily acoustic approach, its songs written largely on an old banjo and nylon-string guitar. His first proper solo album after two decades with Wovenhand, Hyacinth is draped in apocalyptic pall and chilly tendrils of darkwave, its atmosphere co-crafted by producer Ben Chisholm, whose work with Converge and Chelsea Wolfe would certainly qualify him for splashing the canvas with doom and portent. But even amid the subtler moments, wherein the gentle plucks of Edwards’ guitar are left to resonate on their own amid his commanding vocal delivery, Hyacinth is a commanding set of songs.

CRITICS ARE PRAISING DAVID EUGENE EDWARDS' SOLO DEBUT 'HYACINTH'

"The diverse nature of the music on Hyacinth never overshadows the intelligent, well-written lyrics and for me recalls the spirit of the late Mark Lanegan’s Phantom Radio. So, a mature artist steeped in the older, longstanding genres of folk and Americana while experimenting with contemporaneous sounds results in something truly magical such as we have with Hyacinth."

Full review: thesleepingshaman.com

"Hyacinth is yet another extension of Edwards’ intuitive ideologies, and whether these notions will exclusively be dispatched through the lens of his own name or whether the Wovenhand story will resume at some point, either way, the world of new music will always be stronger with David Eugene Edwards in it."

"In the hallowed corn cribs and haunted hollers of gothic Americana, no figure looms larger than David Eugene Edwards. As the resident expert on the darker corners of country music, I’ve followed Mr. Edwards’ career through its various iterations, which started way back in 1988 with the founding of The Denver Gentlemen and what would come to be known as the Denver Sound. This would encompass acts like Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots, Devotchka, and most notably, Edwards’ own 16 Horsepower and Wovenhand."

Full review: angrymetalguy.com

“David Eugene Edwards’ Hyacinth is the debut solo album from the Colorado singer/songwriter, famed for his work in Wovenhand and 16 Horsepower. And in the spirit of his prior work, Hyacinth is a dark, stormy piece of gothic Americana that’s steeped in both acoustic folk and more intensely atmospheric industrial sounds. Inspired by Greek myth and a more overall spiritual search for greater understanding, it features a juxtaposition of subtle and bombastic sounds alike, a hauntingly awe-inspiring set of dark folk at its most apocalyptic.”
