Jaye Jayle’s most recent record Prisyn has been haunting us in quarantine since its release date back in August, but today one of the tracks, “From Louisville,” is taking on a new life with a video by director Bobby Cochran. To accentuate the track’s pounding sense of isolation already emboldened by the songwriter’s bone-rattling baritone, Cochran illustrates the track’s central theme of the struggle to cohabitate by setting it to a series of darkly psychedelic slow-mo images of people blindly reaching in front of them, among other apt symbols.

Along with the video, Jayle shared a few thoughts about the project, as well as some reflections on quarantine, in the brief Q&A.

Jaye Jayle's newest record Prisyn is out now on all platforms. Prisyn’s ten tracks are composites of various snapshots of Evan Patterson’s three-month tour, with the music taking shape on one leg of the journey and the lyrical components coming from some other moment on the road. Having partnered with Ben Chisholm as collaborator and producer, they created an electronic album completely unlike anything else from the fever dream blues of Jaye Jayle.

Jaye Jayle’s sound is hard to define. Some might call it modern blues, given its sonic explorations of the American landscape, recorded during three months of touring the United States. This process meant that the lyrics were often inspired by wholly different terrains to the music compositions, resulting in songs that are discordant to say the least. The likes of A Cold Wind and Guntime captivate, nevertheless, thanks to their loose, woozy, dream-like quality. Evan himself had envisioned Iggy Pop might sing these songs, though it’s Nick Cave’s influence you can hear most clearly – not just in the depth of Evan’s voice, but in the dark obliqueness brooding boldly at the fore.

This similarity is most explicit on The River Spree, which finds Evan in Berlin (‘Berlin… that’s what I’m in’), name-checking David Bowie and the aforementioned Iggy. These figures of familiarity are useful to be able to have and hold on to, because there are few easy ways through these 10 tracks. Neither the music, which is chilly and electronic, nor the vocals, which prioritize poetry over melody, make the most accessible of listens, which could turn some off, but may yield profound rewards for the for the patient listener.

This project began as the soundtrack to an art show, and was inspired by vistas streaming past windows on interminably long drives, so none of this was meant to be easy to enjoy. It’s music to accompany contemplative walks, light skies and dark moods. It’s hard work, but it will work on you.

Verdict: 4/5 // Prisyn is out on August 7 via Sargent House.

Jaye Jayle reveals an evocative new album track, “The River Spree", by way of a new video.

Patterson crafted the music—an organic mixture of digital contrabass and interweaving drones—while driving on tour across the long barren stretch of Kansas. But the lyrics capture a moment across the Atlantic, when Patterson found himself lost in Berlin late at night, peaking on acid, without a working phone, and without knowing the whereabouts of his bandmates.

He charts his journey over the six-minute song with a drug-high ambivalence, recounting a mugging with the same stoicism as breathing in the night air while “thinking about David / thinking about Iggy.” It sounds like Alan Vega singing from an opium den, comfortably numb while recounting some urban nightmare.

About the making of this track Evan comments "I made this original composition while on the driving from St. Louis to Denver. This particular drive is one of the worst in the country. The long straight and barren stretch of Highway that rolls through the entire state of Kansas gifts one a purgatory-like aura. My story of wandering the streets of Berlin while tripping on acid made for an ideal narrative. I could close my eyes and be transported back to that particular evening. And now, you can too."

Today (May 21st), Jaye Jayle have offered up Prisyn's lead single, the haunting, electric-piano-laced "Guntime." In its lyrics, Patterson relays the harrowing and surreal experience of having a car full of teenagers point an Uzi at the Jaye Jayle tour van as the band drove into Paris. Listen — and watch the song's noirish music video, directed by Patterson — above, and below, see Prisyn's cover art and track listing.

"These songs have a totally different energy, and that's the exciting thing about making art," Patterson commented. "Things have to progress. I don't want to draw the same picture for the rest of my life. Maybe that keeps you from being a master at it, but being a master isn't the key to art. It's having that constant expression, the constant outlet, the constant change."
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/63251142020-05-21T10:23:59-07:002020-05-21T10:23:59-07:00Jaye Jayle 'Prisyn' Album Announce + "Guntime" Track Premiere

Jaye Jayle‘s (aka Evan Patterson of Young Widows) last album was 2018’s No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, but he also had a busy 2019, with plenty of touring and the release of the non-album single “Soline,” which is one of 2019’s real gems. With the end of 2019 near, we asked Evan what his favorite albums of the year were, and he sent a list that includes Inter Arma, Chelsea Wolfe, FACS, Weyes Blood, Bill Callahan, Swans, Nick Cave, Kim Gordon, and more. They’re not ranked, but he did pick one favorite. Check out his full list below.

This year has brought me a lot of shows that would be my first time hearing the performing artists. And this one was not an exception. I had a vague idea of what to expect, yet the actual show proved to be beyond anything I imagined. The bands complimented each other perfectly and the music invoked so much emotion, it was hard to contain.

Almost complete darkness on stage, with just a few yellow lights pointed at the faces of the band. From below… Creepy, viby… Hmmm… And then the music starts and immediately captivates everyone at the venue, making people sway in a trance like state. It’s so raw and so beautiful. Just the right amount of complexity and just the right amount of simplicity to make it understandable; to trust it to guide your conscience through whatever journey the musicians are about to take you on. Yet, it’s interesting enough to keep you intrigued. And so amazingly atmospheric with just the right effect and the perfect sound aesthetics complementing the singer’s low and rich voice. A special treat was having an actual saxophone join the band towards the end of the set and making everything even more pleasantly creepy, when you though it couldn’t get any better.
“We filmed across a beach near Dungeness, a flat, almost desert like part of England which houses a gigantic power station. I decided on the location before we fully fleshed out the idea, so there was a lot of inspiration to take from the landscapes. Derek Jarman, an incredible film-maker once lived in a cottage out by the power station, his films have an amazing magical realism that I think we reference in the film.”

“There was an entirely different ending to the film originally and I’d imagine around 40% of the footage we actually used in the edit came through improvisation. There was just so many different tangents you could go on shooting in a place like that.”

With Young Widows, Patterson explores the experimental edge of the rock spectrum in a unique manner, reconfiguring the ideas of progression and the stylistic tendencies of the genre. However, his other project Jaye Jayle is a departure from that sound, seeing Patterson instead dive into the territory of Americana and producing dark and retro works sourced through blues motifs, country progressions, and folk ambiances.

Jaye Jayle began as a fairly minimalistic outlet from Patterson, with the release of various singles and EPs leading to the band's debut album House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out. This work featured again a very minimal setting from Patterson, with the drums and guitars paving the various pathways of the record. The music was still mesmerizing, and the subtle touch of Jaye Jayle resulted in a less is more quality, where the soundscapes became prevalent with some very simple ideas. Now, Patterson returns with the band's second offering, No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, which sees the proper formation of Jaye Jayle. Where House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out felt like a one-man project, even though it featured other musicians, this time around Jaye Jayle feels like a band, with the inclusion of Neal Argabright on drums, Corey Smith on the synthesizer and percussion and Emma Ruth Rundle on vocals and guitars.

No Trail and Other Unholy Paths by Jaye Jayle

The instrumentation still carries the same stripped-down approach that the band's debut album set, with few elements being present at each moment, but with the sound still appearing full and impressive. The textures that each element of the music invokes works towards the final, grand design of Jaye Jayle. For the most part, the motifs stay true to the Americana approach. However, there are moments when certain twists reveal a more modern and experimental take. An example is "Accepting" with the sound taking on a metallic characteristic, as the drums produce a mechanical progression to the otherwise bluesy tone. And still, the dark brew that Jaye Jayle has mixed so intricately features a few surprises, as is the case with the saxophone freestyling over the end of "Accepting" or the more twisted start of "As Soon As Night" with the synths creating these alarm-like sounds in the distance.

The overall ambiance that No Trail and Other Unholy Paths is depicting a neo-noir scenery, not unlike the aura present in great, contemporary neo-Western films like Windriver or Hell or High Water. The exquisite "Marry Us" feels like a dive into this abyss, presenting a majestic trip through a ceremonial procession where Patterson and Rundle shine with their vocal delivery. To this blend of sounds and images, the psychedelic elements that Patterson introduces take the whole endeavor even further, giving it a uniqueness. The excellent "Cemetery Rain" is such a moment, with its haunting presence displaying the morphing capabilities of Jaye Jayle, while the final track of the album sees them dive even further into a krautrock territory reaching an expansive and cosmic level.

However, for the most part, the record does stay within the Americana realm enacting a rural mysticism through images and memories of the American South. The narrative element in such records is dominant, and through the record Patterson is providing wonderful storytelling elements, through the two interchangeable sides of the record. It all makes No Trail and Other Unholy Paths feels like an expedition undertaken through the Appalachian mountains and the fields of Kentucky. It is an endearing and personal release, sourced through a great musical tradition.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/53392052018-07-10T11:42:05-07:002018-07-31T14:36:43-07:00"No Trail and Other Unholy Paths" Review // TREBLE

Evan Patterson’s career has until recently comprised a series of bruising, aggressive if increasingly more spacious recordings. The Louisville musician’s most prolific project to date has been Young Widows, whose post-hardcore has gradually been stretched from concise gut-punches to heavy, psychedelic dirges. Earlier on, he played a role in a number of shorter-lived but consistently aggressive acts including Black Cross, Breather Resist and Black Widows, all of which ranked somewhere between eight and nine on a scale of ass whipping. Jaye Jayle, his latest project, is nothing like any of those bands, and that’s by design. Patterson started it as a solo effort, an avenue for a different sort of dark, nuanced songwriting that didn’t fit in with his heavier full-time band—more Bad Seeds, less Black Flag. Jaye Jayle, too, has been expanded into a proper band, and with the release of sophomore album No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, Patterson reveals himself as much a master at eerily nuanced songwriting as he does at bruising noise rock.

For a brief moment, No Trail gives the impression that it’s something more minimalist and weightless, the piano repetitions of “No Trail: Path One” seemingly fit for a contemporary ambient or post-rock record more than a sinister psych-Americana path. But it’s only in the final minute, all moody synths dripping with dread, where the album’s aesthetic really comes into focus. If it sounds like one of the more harrowing moments from Twin Peaks: The Return, that’s likely not coincidental. The album was produced by Dean Hurley, longtime music supervisor for David Lynch, and the album is awash with the kind of surrealist noir that’s part of the Lynch oeuvre. Patterson and company are more than capable of crafting their own uniquely atmosphere of druggy darkness, however, creating a strange, hallucinatory and consistently strong set of acid goth.

No Trail hits hard often, but it takes shape slowly, the brooding dirge “No Trail: Path Two” slowly building up from the blackened ooze its predecessor began to spread. Sargent House abelmate and previous collaborator Emma Ruth Rundle provides the first of many backing vocals on the record, and while the song takes its time to progress, there’s a lingering, unsettling feeling about it that hangs heavy—a mood more intense than a cranked volume knob ever could be. With “Ode to Betsy,” however, kicks off with a gothic country gallop, injecting some grit and momentum into a record that often gets comfortable in slow-motion spirals. Those spirals are often stunning, however, whether on the surprising appearance of a saxophone during the back half of “Accepting,” the air-raid siren synths of “As Soon As Night” or the industrial-jazz grime of “Low Again Street.”

Though the more overt heaviness of Young Widows isn’t present throughout much of No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, it’s still a remarkably heavy set of songs. That comes in large part through the use of repetition and drone, Patterson and company turning what should be a comfortable groove into something more ominous and menacing. The longer the synths ooze, the guitars ring out or the saxophone squeals, the more dangerous these songs feel.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/53375212018-07-09T11:11:23-07:002018-07-31T14:37:42-07:00Album of the Day: Jaye Jayle, “No Trail and Other Unholy Paths” // Bandcamp Daily

Guitarist/vocalist Evan Patterson originally formed Jaye Jayle as a minimalist, solo antidote to his main band, the bone-crushing Louisville post-hardcore act Young Widows. Now a quartet augmented by bass, drums, and keyboards, Patterson’s group currently hews closer to the shades-tightly-drawn cinematic stylings of Nick Cave and Mark Lanegan.

Via Bandcamp Daily.

Produced by David Lynch’s long-time music supervisor, Dean Hurley, Jaye Jayle’s latest full-length, No Trail And Other Unholy Paths, starts with an instrumental aperitif: “No Trail (Path One)” is driven by overlapping piano (and, later, keyboard) ostinatos that tumble together as if in a clothes dryer. Up next is the hypnotic, dirge-like “No Trail (Path Two).” This song introduces Patterson’s baritone, as stark as spilled black ink pooling on paper, before Emma Ruth Rundle joins in to add even more shade to the vocal fray. “What took you so long?” she whispers, in a tone that’s both conspiratorial and frightened.

The rest of No Trail And Other Unholy Paths follows the same blueprint of mesmerizing unease. Minor-key guitars add macabre heft to insistent rhythmic pulses, shirred keyboard grooves, and scattered instrumental atmosphere. The clattering backdrop of “Ode To Betsy” echoes that of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”; “Low Again Street” is bookended by foggy, diffracted saxophone; and “As Soon As Night” boasts recurring whirring sounds that resemble a power drill.

The album’s emotional and musical highlight, however, is the tension-filled “Marry Us.” Another example of fine vocal interplay between Patterson and Rundle, who are a couple in real life, it’s a searing psychedelic sprawl with well-placed percussion (i.e., raindrop-like beats, devious tambourine shakes) and lyrics smoldering with desire. “Marry us / We don’t need anyone / We don’t need family / Just marry us, now,” Patterson demands. The desperation in his voice increases as he urges that the deed be done “quickly, quickly, quickly, quickly”—words spoken just as loud, crashing guitars surge, as if they’re placing a firm exclamation mark on his exhortation. As this song underscores, No Trail And Other Unholy Paths is a bold step forward for Jaye Jayle, an album that sears the heart without even trying.

Rarely does the word perfect come out of my mouth when describing an album, however I can’t seem to help myself this time. Racking my brain for adjectives to describe No Trail and Other Unholy Paths has continuously led me to the same one; this is a perfect album. Sure the idea of perfection is pretty ridiculous in reality, it doesn’t really exist. So in this sense, it’s all about perspective. This is coming from someone who craves music full of tension, anxiety, unsettling noises, and haunting lyrics. Jaye Jayle is making a career out of checking off all of those boxes.

No Trail is a lesson in how getting mild can be exciting. Sometimes it’s important to restrain yourself and allow for moments to sink in. Starting with the instrumental “No Trail: Path One,” Jayle is letting us no that this album will be doing just that. In fact, when this album is listened to in it’s entirety, it feels like one long moment. “No Trail: Path One” begins with two repeating staccato keyboard melodies that, while they separately feel like happy parts, clash in just the right way to creep you out. That creep factor is magnified once the off-putting cello comes in. This is just the instrumental intro, but it immediately makes you aware of what you are in for.

The three singles released from this album “Ode To Betsy,” “As Soon As Night,” and “Cemetery Rain” are certainly highlights here. All three give us scary vibes from another realm to accompany brooding bass lines from the pits of hell. Specific attention has to be give to the bass tone on “Ode To Betsy,” where the bass entering the song makes the hair on your arms stand up. Throughout the album this tone lingers as a monstrous entity while the riffs being played over the top are absolutely hypnotic.

Vocally, the album is the best of Evan Patterson’s career. It feels like he took some chances on tracks like “Cemetery Rain” where he sings in a higher register. “Marry Us” is another vocal standout where Emma Ruth Rundle joins Patterson for a rushed wedding that, judging by the music alone, has to end bad. The desperation in their voice alone is enough to make you sleep with the lights on. What scenario makes you need to be married in such an urgent fashion? Why does a song about getting married sound like the soundtrack to your death?

I can’t answer every question about what demented part of the universe these tracks come from. I can however, excitedly tell you that this album is a must listen. In many ways, “No Trail and Other Unholy Paths” is what an album is supposed to be. It’s one cohesive piece of art that consistently rips at the same part of your soul until you’re begging for mercy, or depending on what you’re into, begging for more.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/53281962018-07-02T11:48:49-07:002018-07-02T11:49:23-07:00REVIEW: Jaye Jayle - "No Trail And Other Unholy Paths" gets 9/10 // Bearded
9/10

Among my least favorite adjectives in the English language is the word ‘haunted’. Maybe this says more about what I read and listen to and watch, but in order for creative work to earn that description, I feel you need to hit a pretty high standard.

You don’t actually need to see Jaye Jayleperform (FYI… Jaye Jayle isn’t really a person, rather he is the musical persona of Louisville, Kentucky singer/guitarist, Evan Patterson) to know they’re glowering through each track of dank and agonizing beauty on No Trail And Unholy Paths. You can almost feel an ominous stare shoot through the speakers as Ode To Betsy opens with its vacillation between prancing and massively distorted guitars, and the prowling percussion over which the brash vocalist taunts, 'I can guarantee'. Guarantee what? The track feels like someone stalking you in the dark. Sonically, the track’s colour leans toward dystopian western and in stretches becomes almost otherworldly. On the next track, Accepting the band brings a strung out piano line in as an accent to the blasted drums and morbidly terrestrial vocals, which are absolutely teeming with menace. The ironic Cemetery Rain has a bit of Krautrock bounce to it with synth pings, and is what passes for a sonic upper on the album.

The feeling on No Trail... is laid bare in its mercurial, sonically dense atmosphere, produced by Dean Hurley who has served as David Lynch’s musical supervisor for quite some time. Just a bit of Lynch bleeds out onto this record, that’s hard to deny. Everything is dark, lit faintly by one headlight, a trail of road dirt just up ahead. Tracks like As Soon As Night and Mary Us (which he sings with spectral songstress Emma Ruth Rundle) are filled with dusty secrets and musty bones, these hushed little moments of intimacy that contrast with heavy riffs and occasional industrial accents.

Pull back the mask and clearly Patterson’s voice is the album’s heart and broken soul. He plays his voice in a distinctly playful manner. After eight tracks, it becomes an expansive instrument. A few times I wanted this aspect to come further out into the songwriting, transforming the Jayle musical persona into the Americana balladeer of old he imitates so well, but that simply was not in the cards. In places, Patterson’s performances come off like Sun Kil Moon (or even Father John Misty) artists who I’m certain would balk at their inclusion to this list. Patterson tells a wicked tale, but he is not quite a breathless storyteller, and I fail to feel his sense of humor come through.

Enjoying this record isn’t so much about immersing in how each of the songs sound. Rather, its in allowing yourself to surrender to how their cumulative affect feels. And these eight tracks feel haunted like an abandoned house at the far end of the lane. Jaye Jayle is heavy, and not just in the discordant doom metal riffs he brings to the closer, Low Again Street. What becomes clear after listening to No Trail... a few times though, is that you’ve invited the bad boy in, and odds are, he’s not going anywhere. 9/10
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/53231832018-06-29T10:00:00-07:002018-06-29T10:01:22-07:00Jaye Jayle - "No Trail and Other Unholy Paths" Out Everywhere Now

For those unaware of the sinister, weird magnificence of David Lynch, his films and series are usually accompanied by equally strange yet wonderful music: edgy, dark, seductive, indulging the seedy side of Americana. Young Widows frontman Evan Patterson’s solo project Jaye Jayle fits this bill perfectly, its Dark Country-style jangle carrying a profound melancholy, and with sophomore album No Trail And Other Unholy Paths (Sargent House) being produced by Lynch’s musical adviser Dean Hurley, there’s an added resonance here.

Opener ‘No Trail Path One’ is a loop of curious piano, dotted with a retro Electronica melody and swelling keyboard undercurrent which actually evokes Stranger Things rather than anyLynch-ian world. ‘…Path Two’, meanwhile, is Tom Waits-esque: Pattison’s dry, deep croon uttering stark lyrics above a hypnotic, dusty backdrop. The sparing chorus is pregnant with wounded desire, Emma Ruth Rundle’s first appearance haunting yet lightening the air, those twanging chords inducing the devil with the ghosts of Johnny Cash and Robert Johnson.

‘Ode To Betsy’ doesn’t buck this trend initially but the washboard rhythm, Todd Cook’s howling bass and occasional jagged chord add an element of steel to the template, while the mournful build of the second half brings unbelievable tension. The loop and piano intro of the slightly more uplifting ‘Accepting’ brings to mind mid-period Tori Amos, Pattison’s voice soaring to a chilled melody even while delivering the immortal line “If I had a Father I would tell him to fuck off”.

And here’s the rub: despite any attempt at levity, any hooks in the music, the overwhelming air is one of a resigned, fatal recklessness sometimes at odds with the sound. ‘Accepting’s harmonic chime doesn’t disguise the bitter isolation, something the delicious, plaintive sax squeals to great effect. ‘As Soon As Night’ brings that electronic swell to howl over a suicide note, the darkness and tension almost unbearable as the track reaches its climax.

Leadoff release ‘Cemetery Rain’ invokes some of Jon Crosby’s calmer VAST moments, Neal Argabright’s drums again building a wall without hitting crescendo. The gorgeous ‘Marry Us’, meanwhile, is another Rundle-graced, urgent lament to escape, to eventual Bonnie and Clydeoblivion. Closer ‘Low End Street’ sees more of that filthy sax ride above a fizzing bass and deliberate drums, the vocal now possessing a honeyed richness, an echoing lead flutter lighting up the fetid night.

Although bereft of crashing noise ‘No Trail…’ is luscious, emotional, dirty, despairing, and brings a host of influences into a melting pot of diseased loneliness and hedonism the like of which Dorian Gray would revel in. Emotive, cold, utterly fantastic.

No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, the upcoming album by Jaye Jayle, follows the band's mighty impressive recent offerings, House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out, their debut full length from 2016, and The Time Between Us, a collaborative EP with Emma Ruth Rundle. There are a few points about it one could emphasize on right off the bat, like the fact that it was produced by David Lynch’s music supervisor of the last twelve years, Dean Hurley, that it features another collaboration with Rundle, and that it bears no specific beginning or ending, with its songs designed to be experienced in any sequence the listener chooses.

Jaye Jayle's Americana-noir sound has always been enticing, but never voiced better than how it is on the coming record.

The multi-talented and cultivated Evan Patterson answers a few questions.

What made you decide to put Young Windows aside and begin a project like Jaye Jayle with such a different sound and approach?

Young Widows hasn't been put aside. I hold the songs and experiences very dear. Nick and Jeremy started families. The time available to create, write, and travel became infrequent. For many years prior to conceiving Jaye Jayle I had been wanting to make compositions that were based around stories or vocal melodies as the lead instrument. Lending the music to relax and settle down somewhere similar to that of film score. I've touched a bit on that concept and sound with Young Widows.

Never thought of my music groups as being projects. Maybe when Jaye Jayle was first conceived it was more of a project. The process of creating as a group is such an emotional and personal investment. Each piece or song is more of the project within the group.

How would you describe the band's present dynamic? And how has it advanced since the previous album?

The group has a steady dynamic. Neal, Todd, Corey, and I spent the majority of our lives together in 2016 and 2017 touring. The closer we become the more advanced our communication through music becomes. Experimenting is much easier now, allowing the songs to be elaborated. House Cricks was a collection of songs from four different sessions. No Trail is consistent to a sound and mood composed as the group.

What does Dean Hurley bring to the album's sound design? and how does his production complement the compositions?

I believe that what Dean enjoys to hear in music is what I also enjoy to hear in music. We sent him a massive amount of tracks; Low Again Street had near 80 tracks to sift through. Dean had total creative control as the mixing producer. The result is a wide colorful spectrum of sounds. It's exciting to be able to work with him.

There's great chemistry between Emma Ruth Rundle and yourself, evident on your prior collaborative EP and on Marry Us, a captivating song on the new album. Are there any other artists you'd imagine as ideal collaborators for Jaye Jayle?

I'd loved to collaborate with more artists. Yes, more collaborations are must. It's preferred. I dreamt of asking Rachel Grimes if she'd like to collaborate on a piece or album, but have been delaying asking. Drew Miller's saxophone on the album is another perfect example of leaving sections of the composition open for additional collaborative improvised instrumentation. Honestly, I feel that even working with Dean is a collaboration.

I had the pleasure of collaborating with Emma on her new album earlier this year. No hand in writing the songs, but total freedom to write the additional second guitar parts. Her album came out gorgeous. I'd also love to join more artists.

Do you prefer physical media over digital? Are you a record collector?

I prefer all formats and sources for anyone and everyone to listen to music. I just made a playlist on Spotify and was shocked by what all is available through that outlet. I am a record collector. I bought a record today by Flash and the Pan. Their song Walking in the Rain is perfect. The record was three dollars. I'm collecting Ennio Morricone scores.

What are you currently listening to mostly?

I've been listening to the score for the film Marco Polo by Ennio Morricone in the evenings. The album Time Was by Zomes has been a favorite for the past three years. Fela Kuti in the mornings. The two most recent PJ Harvey albums are regular listens while on the road. Tangerine Dream, Jim Reeves, Fred Neil, and Einstürzende Neubauten.

Outside music, what other sources have had heavy impact on your creativity?

A few. Looking above the rolling hills of Kentucky or the desert in New Mexico. Any elevated perspective or a landscape is inspiring. To see nature in all its beauty gives me a sense of clarity. Film is an big inspiration. Phantom Thread was great. I've also been doing my best to see more visual art around Louisville. There's a few museums in town that are curating some fantastic exhibits.

The new album's cover looks wonderful, rather abstract at first glance and ultimately pretty bleak. What made you choose that image to represent the music?

There is something relieving and yet tortured with the image. Placed between the lightness and darkness of nature. It's a balance between those two worlds. Stuck between the heavens and the hells of mental health.

Having the songs on the record arranged to be non-linear and interchangeable is a very interesting approach, and not something we encounter often. What made you decide to design the LP that way?

The concept came to me from feeling that regardless of my options and my choices in life, regardless of door A or door B, my paths would have me ending up ultimately in the same placement. We hope to do the things we love and survive. The idea of my desires have seemingly taken me to a place that I felt I could have been in regardless of which wall I tore down or which forest I cut through or ocean I swam through. Forward motion. The direction is not what's important. I've just kept going and trying to bring a sense of joy out through art and never give in. I'm not making this music for anyone else. I'm making it because it makes me feel alive. I have survived thus far because I've continued to not just fall into a pattern or follow a format in life. Everything I live for still feels very strange and exciting. Life is a constant surprise. Guaranteed.

What does the near future hold for Jaye Jayle?

The album is out in nine days. We're announcing nine weeks of touring soon. If all goes well, I'd love to complete another album by the end of the year.

I think I might have just accidentally found the best way to listen to this record. Of course, there’s very little in the way of “wrong” ways of listening to it as it really is as good as I hope to explain below, but I’ve discovered that walking around a dark wood on an oppressively humid sunless day really gets Jaye Jayle’s new opus under the skin and into the more permanently receptive areas of the subconscious.

No Trail and Other Unholy Paths is aptly named. The Young Widows’ Evan Patterson pushes his alter ego project further into the dark spaces previously occupied by the dark country of his House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out debut and his weirdly cosmic half of The Time Between Us split EP with Emma Ruth Rundle, and comes out of the other side in a much more frighteningly romantic frame of mind.

Usually found in amongst the drawn-out spaces between his music, here Jaye Jayle sits more front and centre of your attention than usual. A choir of sequencers herald the approach of the album with ‘No Trail: Path One’, before ‘…Path Two’ begins a more initially familiar-feeling funereal traipse through a meticulously arranged soundscape that seems to lead from where Evan has been before to where he want to take us to next. It’s a dark and oppressive path for certain.

It’s not a wholly unfamiliar journey, but it has to be said that the sparse marker stones and ominous signposts are welcome and shaped by Jaye into something definitely suiting his purposes. Nick Cave is an obvious overarching mood, and Sargent House label mates Wovenhand bob to the surface here and there – not least the percussive deep assault assault on the senses and abrupt halt that is ‘Ode to Betsy’. Even Pink Floyd make their strangest hint in a song with Wall-echoing closer ‘Low Again Street’. The majority of what forms my favourite parts of this record however seem to come from a single source, albeit filtered through a myriad other places (not least Jaye Jayle’s own universe). Mark Laegan’s Bubblegum doesn’t so much loom large in places, but appears – somewhat appropriately – as a ghost in the more desperately longing moments. This spectre is mostly apparent in the sultry and urgent (and beautifully personal – congratulations are due to the pair of them) duet with Emma Ruth Rundle ‘Marry Us’, a crossroads where ‘Come to Me’ and ‘Wedding Dress’ have met up to exchange souls with whatever awaits them. Naturally, it’s a high point on an album during which there are many competitors.

The weirdest, darkest and – for want of a better term in a very carefully-layered and strangely complex record of arrangements – busiest track comes with ‘Cemetery Rain’, a song which stands out for not only its collection curious moments which appear from the very beginning (the bassline seems to be pulled from Primus’ ‘Here Come the Bastards’) and switches immediately to a brutal concrete post-punk performance seemingly powered by Joy Division with an added layer of Echo & the Bunnymen, the latter particularly coming across via Patterson’s vocal pitch and phrasing. It may seem initially disorienting but it soon makes perfect sense – another ghost which haunts No Trail… is the welcome background hand of the late Martin Hannett, an influence which is characteristically sparse but which provides all the extra-spectrum colour that this album contains and projects.

This is a very fine record. There is no doubt that it will stand any test that time decides to throw at it because it already sounds older than it could ever be. It will never feel truly familiar because there is so much buried within its structure that I expect to be hearing something new with years of repeated listens in so many different circumstances and moods. And I will probably never shut up telling anyone within earshot to pick this up and lose themselves in its many folds and terrifying trails and hallways. And even though there are many hidden markers and signs left by others, there really isn’t anything like this. Not even the bits you think you know.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/52932622018-06-13T10:07:18-07:002018-06-13T10:09:53-07:00Listen to New Jaye Jayle Track "As Soon As Night" // The Quietus

Young Widows' Evan Patterson launched his Americana-noir project Jaye Jayle in 2014 with a debut album, House Cricks And Other Excuses To Get Out, following two years later. Now he's back with a second album for the alias, titled No Trail And Other Unholy Paths.

Premiering above is the downtempo 'As Soon As Night' from the album. "'As Soon As Night' is the most enjoyable song to perform on the album," says Patterson. "Originally, I called it 'The Break Up Song'. The words are very clear. If there's any confusion maybe give the song another listen, maybe a little louder this time, and let the sounds just spiral around the story."

The album sees Patterson joined by a band consisting of Todd Cook on bass, Neal Argabright on drums and Corey Smith on other instrumentation. Patterson says that the album has no specific beginning or ending with side A and B of the vinyl version intended to be played interchangably.

Jaye Jayle — “Ode to Betsy”
In advance of the release of their next record, Jaye Jayle has released a pair of singles, including “Ode to Betsy.” Singer Evan Patterson has a voice that sounds hewn from rough leather, dusty and creaking, more than a little like Nick Cave. The band is firing at their very best, a tension built and released only intermittently, an ever-nearing wave always on the horizon, but one that fully crashes. This is a seething number that dances on the head of a needle, never quite falling off, but always on the precipice.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/52684812018-05-31T14:43:55-07:002018-05-31T14:43:55-07:008.5/10 for Jaye Jayle's "No Trail and Other Unholy Paths" // Salad Days Mag
Full article via Salad Days.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/52527782018-05-23T08:58:49-07:002018-05-23T08:58:49-07:00Jaye Jayle Premiers New Song “Cemetery Rain” // Stereogum

Evan Patterson is no stranger to darkness. As the guitarist and vocalist of the Louisville post-hardcore trio Young Widows, he channeled that darkness into twisted, muscular noise-rock full of a whole lot of sound and a whole lot of fury. And as the leader of Jaye Jayle, once a solo project but now a full-band endeavor, he shapes it into something shadowy and more subtle, a brooding, bluesy form of haunted gothic Americana.

Jaye Jayle are following up last year’s full-length debut House Cricks And Other Excuses To Get Out with a new one called No Trail And Other Unholy Paths next month, and we’ve already heard the gnarled, blackened roots-rock of “Ode To Betsy.” Now they’ve shared another new track, “Cemetery Rain,” a minimal, locked-in song that rides a buzzy synth-driven groove out into a restrained yet cathartic rockout.

“The arrangement for ‘Cemetery Rain’ was written on the guitar several years before the idea hit me to transpose the main elements to the synthesizer,” Patterson says. “Immediately, the entire song took form. As if a UFO had landed in my front yard and one of the greatest mysteries of the world was revealed. Aliens may not be real, but walking in the cemetery … in the rain … is very real. I have lived that.” Listen to “Cemetery Rain” below.

Tuesday nights aren’t typically the best nights for shows. — I dread them when I myself am on the road. This passed Tuesday May 15th at Zanzabar was a different story however. Seeing Jaye Jayle and Fotocrime together was something that I had been looking forward to for a month after seeing the flyer, and I was absolutely notdisappointed.

Jaye Jayle played the darkest set I’ve ever seen at Z-Bar — not just musically, but also literally. Lead singer and guitarist Evan Patterson asked the folks running the stage area to turn all the lights off so the band could rely on small lamps attached to their mic stand. Adding to the aura, these little lights amplified what ended up being the best set I’ve ever seen the band play. They were incredibly tight and every song had a monumental impact on me as a musician, and a fan of music in general.

This was my first time seeing Fotocrime, and as you’d expect with a Ryan Patterson collective, they were absolutely badass. The three piece rocked through their set with little interruption. At one point, someone leaned over and said to me, “Post punk is not dead.” That statement is hard to deny while Fotocrime is melting your face. As I watched them, I was imagining them in a much larger situation, reminiscent of seeing New Order headlining Glastonbury.

Needless to say, this was an epic Tuesday show. Jaye Jayle and Fotocrime are great examples of the diversity of stellar artists/bands that we have in this city. Check out the videos below for a taste of what I’m talking about.

My first experience with Jaye Jayle was seeing them live opening for Oathbreaker. It seems like their blend of americana, kraut-rock grooves and Morricone-esque soundtracking would be an odd fit for a metal show, their presence and weightiness stole the show for me. I was so impressed by their performance that I became a bit obsessed with both their debut album House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out and their outstanding split release with Emma Ruth Rundle The Time Between Us. I didn’t know at the time (even though he looked familiar) that the main songwriter was Evan Patterson from the mighty Young Widows. As a fan of Young Widows this just intrigued m even more. How does a person go from the thunder and fury of Young Widows to the dark, moody and tension filled music of Jaye Jayle? When the opportunity to interview Evan about their upcoming album No Trail and Other Unholy Paths (available June 29th via Sargent House) I jumped at the chance to hear more about this intriguingly unique project.

We planned on talking after their set opening for Russian Circles at the Empty Bottle here in Chicago. Evan immediately strikes you as a warm and engaged person, he gives everyone who approaches him his undivided attention. It seemed like no matter where we went to begin the interview he was being approached by old friends, acquaintances or newly made fans and he always took the time to share some words with them. I was really impressed by his kindness towards strangers and his patience when confronted with some of Chicago’s more exuberant drunks. The conversation that followed was a real pleasure to have and I’m even more of a fan of the band now that I’ve spent some time hearing about it’s genesis and evolution.

(((o))): How did Jaye Jayle get born out of Young Widows?

Evan Patterson: The initial thought of the project or the idea of writing songs outside of Young Widows was just to not think about anything in capacity of it being performed. It was just kind of writing songs casually. I was actually in Santa Fe, NM visiting a past partner. She had a parlour guitar that was all fucked up, the bridge was already pulling away and the only thing I could do was kind of play on the last five frets to get it to stay in tune. I decided I was just going to write a song or what I felt was a song. It was always just a couple of minutes or a couple of parts. Not a deliberate idea of anything, just kind of a stream of consciousness thing.

(((o))): Previously did you write with a more compositional approach?

Evan: A little bit, once the band becomes involved in a project or any kind of composition or songwriting to me it makes to consider that they are there. There’s Jaye Jayle songs that I work that have no base of anyone playing with me and when we get together and play them they just come out how they are. One the band becomes involved it’s adding the saturation or the color to the song.

(((o))): That kind of my addresses my follow up question. I know that you’re the main songwriter but do you bring raw ideas to the band and let them play to their strengths or do you dictate who does what?

Evan: It’s a bit of a compositional dictatorship in the songwriting process until we get to the pinnacle moment of a song or a piece. I say here’s all the ideas I have and here’s the drum beat and this is where I hear the bass to be and this is where I hear the vocal melody and once it all becomes musical, that’s where the freedom sets in. Then we can say “this section of song is open” but it takes a long time to get to that place but those guys are

(((o))): You have some great players.

Evan: Todd (Cook) is my favorite bass player to ever live on the face of the planet and Neal (Argabright) can play keyboards better than anyone else. Todd and Neal don’t want to be soloists, they want to be part of the composition rather than just doing the same thing or wondering when they get to take the lead. There’s no leads. It’s more of a score.

(((o))): It’s interesting to me that a lot the press around you guys bring up the kraut-rock kind of influences and I hear it a bit but when I think about bands like say Can often times the song is just a really long guitar solo. I hear it in more of say Michael Rother’s (Neu!) solo stuff where all of the instruments are placed well, or contributing to the whole piece.

Evan: When I listen to Can I don’t really listen to the guitar work as much as I do the forward motion of the songs rather than it just being parts. When a Can song starts you kind of know it’s not going to leave. You always know when you hear the beginning of a Can song if that’s going to be the Can song you want to listen to or if you don’t want to listen and that’s usually in the rhythm section.

(((o))): So the new album is produced by Dean Hurley(David Lynch’s sound collaborator). I love Twin Peaks and the sound design has always been a big part of that, especially in the most recent season. How did working with him come about?

Evan: That sound design is all Dean. I actually had no idea about any of his collaborations with David Lynch until I heard Lynch’s album ‘The Big Dream’ and I’m such a fan of that record. Something about the way it incorporated modern music and that Twin Peaks sound, everything about that. I associated with so much of what’s going on with that record, maybe at times not melodically or vocally what was going on but the production of it completely surrounded me. So I saw that Dean Hurley worked on, produced and co-wrote the record so I just wrote him an email.

(((o))): Nice, that simple huh?

Evan: Yeah, he said “send me some songs” and then he said he loved the kind of strange blues-dirge thing we were doing.

(((o))): One thing I love about you guys is the music does kind of the same thing as Twin Peaks, it creates an environment that you kind of live within during the duration of the music. When I found out Dean Hurley produced it I thought that made perfect sense for what you do.

Evan: Yeah, me too.

(((o))): You recorded it at Earth Analog (Matt Talbot of Hum’s studio) right?

Evan: Yeah in Tolono, Il which is also kind of a Twin Peaks oddball kind of place. It’s an old industrial wasteland that’s a crossroads for trains. Where we were there were trains going by every ten minutes at such a high speed that they would shake the building.

(((o))): Did you have to stop working when the trains went by?

Evan: There’d be times where we’d work around it and there’d be times that we’d just play. There’s train horns all over the recording, mostly in a way that wouldn’t even know and you’d probably just think it’s a synthesizer.

(((o))): In the press release for the album it mentions that it’s designed to be completely non linear, where you can start it at any point. I think that’s an interesting departure from both people who think that the single is everything and the kind of people who write big concepts that are meant to be listened to in a very specific way.

Evan: It’s difficult to listen to a full album. The attention span of a modern human being is so small, I feel like we have the attention span of an ant. It’s just how it is when we have accessibility to everything and everything. With that each side of a record needs to live on it’s own because the is the attention span of human beings. I love records and I collect a ton of record and so many records that I have it’s difficult to get up and flip the side, you know? Being a collector and investing myself in artists from all times, anything that was created on vinyl really, there’s a thing about listening to one side of a record and having it feel complete. Rather than the ending of the first side leaving you hanging, I just wanted to feel like it doesn’t leave you hanging.

(((o))): Not a lot of people take people’s attention span into consideration, haha.

Evan: It’s just a fact.

(((o))): You’re active in a lot of projects, the most active being Jaye Jayle and Young Widows, do you sit down and with intention to write for either or do you just write and decide where it lives later?

Evan: Young Widows is very inactive right now, we’re rehearsing and doing Old Wounds but we didn’t play at all for about 14 months. But it kind of refers back to your first question with writing music and spontaneity of creativity. Jaye Jayle and the songs we write are just what I’m writing right now. Young Widows songs a lot of time were just from showing up and playing and seeing what happens. Composition always kind of came later after we’d been playing for a while. With Jaye Jayle pieces they’re just something I work on every single day for hours and hours, whether it’s playing one chord for three weeks trying to find the melody or dynamic or rhythm within that note or chord or whatever it might be. I absolutely love Jaye Jayle, it brings me more joy than anything I’ve ever done in my entire life. It’s the most euphoric and hypnotic and therapeutic music that I’ve ever created and I feel lucky to have the band because they’re all on the same page.

(((o))): With Jaye Jayle there’s a kind of tension where it feels like it’s about to explode but it never does whereas Young Widows feels like everything is exploding all the time.

Evan: Absolutely

(((o))): Is that conscious decision? Kind of intentionally moving away from that more explosive outlet and stripping it back?

Evan: It’s definitely unconscious and unintentional. It’s more exciting for me to be contained and in control. I was extremely nervous tonight in a way of being in control. It’s so much easier to go full on, just playing loud and having it turn into this chaotic thing. Staying in the environment we have created is exciting because it’s difficult. The instincts of being a musician is at times playing more and everyone having their times of stepping out of the composition. Honestly I feel what’s going on with this music is the tip of the iceberg of what’s going to happen and there’s going to be even more tension and control going forward.

(((o))): You played a lot of new material tonight and one thing that really struck me is the restraint your auxiliary player (Corey Smith) shows, he’ll just rest and wait. Finding musicians like that is pretty rare. That adds to overall feeling that at any moment one of these guys is just going to bust out into a solo or lead line but they never do, is that kind of a theme?

Evan: I don’t know if it’s a theme so much as it is an idea of composition rather than individuals. At times even the singing and the lyrical subject matter and the control of even singing, I don’t even want that to shine. I always think about film and film scores. I just rewatched Badlands and that film influenced me highly. Watching that again and every time the music comes in it doesn’t take you out of the film it kind of puts you more in it. It gives you a narrative and a voice and almost earthly place. I know everyone in the band understands that feeling, we’ve all been playing music for a long time and we’ve never been it in trying to live a world of dominant showing off. We just all want to create an environment.

(((o))): It works really well, even tonight where you played mostly new songs that I had never heard it didn’t really matter because the environment is consistent and holds your attention. Which brings me to the last question. Is it hard to switch from this controlled environment back to the Young Widows sound for you upcoming tour?
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/52002822018-04-24T14:59:01-07:002018-04-24T15:13:05-07:00Jaye Jayle - “Ode To Betsy” // Stereogum

For years, Evan Patterson has been exploring dark, subterranean sonics as the guitarist and vocalist of the Louisville post-hardcore/noise-rock trio Young Widows. But he recently stepped out on his own to explore a different kind of darkness, making bluesy, brooding Americana under the name Jaye Jayle. The project expanded to a full four-piece band last year with the release of their full-length debut House Cricks And Other Excuses To Get Out. And today, Patterson and co. have announced its followup, the evocatively titled No Trail And Other Unholy Paths, which will be out in June on the heavy music haven Sargent House.

“Paths are the future and trails are the past. These pieces of music are for the future,” Patterson says by way of explanation. “The album has a lyrical theme in motion and direction, searching and questioning, and discovery. A certainty in placement and uncertainty in destination. Primal consideration for surroundings, which may be or may not have been the surroundings sought after. The grayness of life’s paths. The where-have-I-been, where-am-I-now, and where-will-I-be.” Appropriately, the album was constructed to have no specific beginning or end, with sides A and B meant to be interchangeable starting points. Even more appropriately, it was produced by Dean Hurley, who’s served as David Lynch’s go-to music supervisor for the past 12 years.

That Lynchian darkness is on full display on new track “Ode To Betsy,” along with a sizable helping of Nick Cave-ian heaviness. The song unfurls like the gnarled roots of an old oak, burrowing its way into your skull through its hypnotically unrelenting repetition. Listen and let it sink into you below.

I love it when metal artists veer outside the lanes we expect them to and how thrown people can get as a result. I’ve watched Scott Kelly of Neurosis give a few thousand headbangers small fits of confusion opening up for Sleep with a quiet set of acoustic tunes. And I’ve watched Jaye Jayle, the dark roots rock project of Young Widows member Evan Patterson, turn a room on its head when he played a set before Belgian black metal wizards Oathbreaker.

The work that Patterson has done under this name has only gotten seamier, more intense and infinitely more satisfying as he’s dug his heels in. And he’s reached a new peak with forthcoming album No Trail and Other Unholy Paths (out on June 29 via Sargent House). He and his band (bassist Todd Cook, drummer Neal Argabright and multi-instrumentalist Corey Smith) recorded a collection of sodium light drenched tunes and let David Lynch collaborator Dean Hurley have his way with them. It’s a devilish meeting of spirits that feels like being adrift at sea, awed by the beauty but a little scared about how you’re getting home.

To announce this new album properly, Patterson is sharing with us the clattering wonder “Ode To Betsy,” about which he says:

In creating this world of sound, I’ve visioned peaceful hypnotic nature, monstrous euphoric structures, and relative quests for certainty. Sonic terrains of tension, plateaus of primal experimentation, and the droning stillness atop of the high plains. Gazing equally into the past as onto the future. From there, looking up to the dark and shining mysteries of time and space; a story of placement comes from the physical self. Yes, that is this music, to me.

Jay Jayle kicked the night off with their On the Road-esque bluesy blend of rock. Cloaked in amber lighting on a stage that left little room for movement, you can really hear the southern roots so deeply threaded in their music. I’ve always felt their music would be the perfect soundtrack to a gritty, adventure-filled and nicotine-saturated movie – indie of course, not the mainstream variety. It’s a sound that reminds me of small towns and late nights spent on the porch with an acoustic guitar and moths fluttering around the light, especially when they were joined by Emma Ruth Rundle.

Kicking off the night was Jaye Jayle. Conceived by Evan Patterson of Young Widows, this group set the night off with a stark mood that was drenched in blues and dreary vibes all the while creating a sense of calm before the storm. I’ll admit when I checked them out before seeing them live I wasn’t sure what to expect but, as they played through their set, I became more and more engrossed in what they were doing. Mixing blues with bits of folk and southern gospel, Jaye Jayle is quite the sight to see live. As good as they sound on their album, seeing them live really makes it stand out.

When Emma Ruth Rundle unveiled her gorgeous, critically-acclaimed album Marked For Death last year, the Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter ended up with some extra songs that wouldn’t physically fit on the vinyl. As luck would have it, the same thing happened to Evan Patterson while he was finishing up his solo project Jaye Jayle’s full-length debut, House Cricks and Other Excuses To Get Out, in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Rundle and Patterson had first met on tour in late 2009 when Rundle’s then-band, Red Sparowes, spent a week touring with Russian Circles and Patterson’s other band, Young Widows. Nearly eight years later, the two highly prolific musicians decided to combine Rundle’s atmospheric heartbreak with Jaye Jayle’s dark Americana for the split release The Time Between Us. By merging material that they couldn’t squeeze onto their respective full-lengths, Rundle and Patterson created a fictional interstate love story that stands as its own conceptual work. We recently spoke with both artists about the origin of the record and their upcoming European tour.

What initially drew each of you to the other’s music?

Rundle: Well, it’s hard to separate my opinion or feeling about Jaye Jayle from my opinion or feeling about Evan. I have a long history of really appreciating him as a guitarist. He has this style that he carries into all of his projects—and I think Jaye Jayle showcases this the most—which is the sensual, rootsy quality of his playing. It’s just this essence—Evan’s essence! [Laughs] And you should definitely use that.

Patterson: My favorite thing about Emma’s music is that it’s highly emotionally charged. It’s music that’s extremely personal and relatable. That’s something I’ve always been inspired by with songwriters. If you hear a song that you’re attached to, most of the time it’s about personal experiences that you can relate to, and I feel that way with her songs very much. It holds up to the test of time, and that’s inspiring.

Who hatched the idea for this split?

Rundle: Probably Cathy [Pellow] at Sargent House, but I’m not sure. I had these songs that I recorded in the Marked For Death session that couldn’t fit on the record and didn’t make sense to be part of that release. Which is fine, because the song “The Distance” made sense living in its own world. The plan was to do a seven-inch, but then Evan reached out last year when he was on tour with Jaye Jayle and asked if I would want to hop onstage and play a song with them. I wasn’t able to, but we started talking about doing stuff.

Patterson: It was Cathy. The original idea for these Jaye Jayle songs, which were recorded during the House Cricks sessions… there’s this pedal company called Old Blood Noise Endeavors; they do these limited cassette runs. They sent me some of their pedals, which were wild, so I was like, ‘What if I run these songs entirely through these pedals and did a cassette?’ Then I asked Cathy if she wanted to do a 7-inch single of the cassette, and she said, ‘Why don’t you just do a split with Emma?”’

What’s the story behind the title, The Time Between Us?

Rundle: Evan and I went back and forth on several titles, but I want to give him credit for most of it. He really was the champion of this whole project. He came up with a bunch of different titles and then we kind of honed in on what it became. But it started with the images on the cover. In the photo of me, I’m supposed to be an ice skater from Dallas who’s really heartbroken. [Laughs] That’s the vibe of that character. When I sent it to Evan, he immediately responded with his take on it. He did the same pose and had the strong color theme, so in my mind it kind of turned into this strange, otherworldly love story between to two fictional characters. I don’t know if Evan feels the same way about it.

Patterson: The title is kind of a play off her song, “The Distance,” and my song, “About Time You Came To Me.” On the album cover, I’m wearing a hat that I bought at Goodwill for a dollar about a year ago. The actual size of my head is huge, so I can never find hats that fit, and I never have money to order a hat. And then we just happened to have these oversized tokens and this strange fake-fruit cornucopia in my house, and I thought there was something surreal about that with Emma’s fake flowers. So I guess I’m kind of the cowboy gentleman to Emma’s crying ice skater. The whole image seems like some kind of haunted wedding invitation or wedding photo. [Laughs]

The songs streaming on Bandcamp are Emma’s “The Distance” and Jaye Jayle’s “Unnecessarily.” What can you tell us about those?

Rundle: “The Distance” is a love song. It’s about being separated from the person you love, and the space you go to when you’re apart. It’s the cliché kind of love stuff about how the person fills the void in your soul. It’s cliché, but it’s not dishonest. The aesthetics of the song have kind of a Twin Peaks vibe. The video thing I made for it is kind of a fantasy-land that I would describe as Sinead O’Connor living in a Twin Peaks world. [Laughs]

Patterson: “Unnecessarily” is kind of a playful mess. I ran the entire song through my pedal board and was just slamming on weird effects to make all these sounds. I was going to just leave it instrumental, but then I thought, “What if I tried to sing on it?” Besides the word “unnecessary,” most of it is just improvisational and stream-of-consciousness gibberish. [Laughs] I’m a big fan of the band Can, and [Can vocalist] Damo Suzuki is probably only saying real words every couple of lines, but there’s something about just hearing a melody regardless of what language or even if it’s understandable. It’s just a relatable sound in a voice.

You’re touring Europe together in the spring. What’s the plan?

Rundle: Yeah, Jaye Jayle is going to be my backing band. I’ll play a song with them and then they’ll be my band, so it’ll be this family situation. I think the plan is for me to go to Louisville for a week before we go to Europe so we can rehearse.

Patterson: When we get together we’ll start coming up with ideas of when to do what and which songs to play and which instruments we’re gonna use. We’ve got an array of keyboards and instruments we’ve been using lately with a lot of the new songs we’ve been writing, so we’ve got a lot of exciting things we can do to make the tour truly unique and a different experience from any other tour we’ve done before or maybe even after.

Evan Patterson began Jaye Jayle, a plodding, indie-blues outfit that favors stark textures and minimalism, during trips to visit an ex-flame in New Mexico. With the help of a broken guitar, and inspired by the solitude and beauty of a land of enchantment, Patterson brought his vision to life — a sound that seems to be pulled straight from the mind of “Blood Meridian” author Cormac McCarthy.

“The whole idea of the band, the Jaye Jayle name, was a tribute to country singers and blues singers and artists that have names that sound great,” Patterson said. “I decided to write a song that day. Just guitar and singing. I’d write a song a day and record it on my phone. A lot of those songs were from our travels or being in New Mexico, which is a truly beautiful place. It predates anything I’ve been around. The oldest church in the country is there.”

Those songs that he recorded on his phone were released as a series of singles. Taking the project a step further, Patterson assembled a band, including Jonathan Glen Wood and Todd Cook (formerly of Old Baby), Neil Argabright (Freakwater) and Corey Smith — some of the most versatile musicians in town. They released House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out in the fall of last year.

It was during those sessions that Patterson and company recorded their newest batch of songs for The Time Between Us, a split with Emma Ruth Rundle, which will be released on Friday, Feb. 24. Each of the three songs on the split is, in and of itself, an individual experiment, filtered through stream-of-conscious lyricism and a host of effects that enrich the sound.

“The compositions, the drum beats, and the structures, are a lot of things that I can’t even play,” Patterson said. “I can hum and suggest things that happen. The collaboration has other suggestions. I’ve got some ideas. Let’s get together and put together those ideas, which are very open to interpretation.”

The songs are a collection of loose ends, holdovers reworked for a new sonic era. “Unnecessarily” is an improvised ramble, awash in a sea of mumbled syllables. The album’s closer, “Hope Faith County,” is a reworking of an older song. “About Time You Came To Me” deals with love and loss.

“‘About Time You Came To Me’ is a song that is about literally being in Louisville, and the partner who I was with at the time, not being there and wanting to do this long-distance thing,” Patterson said. “I do think that there is a lot of beautiful things that happen with the passion of commitment to stay together, but not be together. You learn a lot.”

Coming up in the punk and hardcore scene of rural Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Patterson worked hard to rise above the button-down conservative leanings of where he was raised. Moving to Louisville at an early age, he became addicted to the guitar (see: “The Guitar” by Young Widows), performing with bands including A National Acrobat, Breather Resist and Black Widows before forming Young Widows in 2006. Never one to settle, Patterson came to work with collaborator Jonathan Glen Wood on the project Old Baby, a haunted and heavy indie/country mash up that ended in 2014.

“After that Of Youth and Lightness album, there were a lot of things I wanted to express that were not sonically as harsh,” Patterson said.

Recently, Patterson and the band found their new home on Sargent House, which suggested the split release between Jayle Jayle and Emma Ruth Rundle. He was excited at working with Rundle, a longtime acquaintance.

“I had a really strong connection with her when I met her, just through personalities, and the experience of traveling and being out of town,” he said. “So, it absolutely made sense that we were going to make this record together. We’re going to tour Europe together and be her band. We’re going to have a really good time in Europe that will probably be unique to both of our sets.”

That openness for exploration has manifested itself as a wanderlust, not just to take his art into the world, but to explore the music in doing so. For Patterson, it’s about letting each moment live. He has cultivated a space that allows him the opportunity to explore new sonic worlds and to expand on older material, as well.

“At this point, playing music has to do with traveling,” Patterson said. “It has to do with taking what we’re doing and playing it for people. Not just as a recording, but as a live experience that is completely different from any recording we will ever have. No song we will ever have will stay the same.”

This Friday, February 24, the WORLD AS WE KNOW IT will be IRREVOCABLY ALTERED. I know: that sounds a little dramatic… but hell, so do both this news story’s formidable, Sargent House-affiliated protagonists, Emma Ruth Rundle and Jaye Jayle.

Given that you’re such a cool person, general fan of mold-shattering independent music, and fanatical follower of TMT, you probably remember near the end of last year when we told you that Jayle and Rundle would soon be teaming up for a new six-song split EP, titled The Time Between Us, featuring three brand new tracks from each artist.

And, well, guest what? Yup, this coming Friday totally marks the release date for that very special EP. Think of it, readers: all of Rundle’s “lonely tones,” “dusty landscapes,” “swells of reverb,” and “sparkles of lyrical intensity” finally united with Jayle’s bizarre cross-mutations of outerspace-oriented Krautrock and grave-digger country-blues.

Gee, sounds utterly amazing, no? Toooooo baaaaad that Friday is still an excruciating three days wait from now, isn’t it? Oh well, though. Nothing can be done about that… OH WAIT, FUCK THAT: Pre-order your own highly durable and/or extremely portable copy of The Time Between Us now on your choice of gritty vinyl, shiny CD, or iTunes-y digital. And, just for being such a cool person, general fan of mold-shattering independent music, and fanatical follower of TMT, I’m happy to announce that, as of right now, you can stream the entire EP till your heart’s content via the player down below while you wait for it to show up at your door/download queue! (Also, to help you get even more of your Jayle/Rundle fix, keep a-scrollin’ on down after the tracklisting to peep the plethora of tour dates that one or both of these spooky songsmiths has coming up on his/her spring agenda.) See, what’d I tell you? Consider all your shit: IRREVOCABLY ALTERED.

The EP boasts three previously unreleased tracks from each artist.

Due for release on 24th February, the EP acts as an excellent introduction to Jaye Jayle and a timely reminder of how hauntingly majestic Emma Ruth Rundle’s work is. ‘The Distance’ is trademark ERR, minimalist yet haunting backdrop allows her vocal to excel. As with much of her work it’s the vocal that suckers you in with the atmospheric laidback musical accompaniment making it all a little more chilling. ‘To Fold In England (Hours)’ does the admirable job of sounding like ERR most tortured and fragile piece of work. It aches and pulses in waves of emotion. Finishing off the ERR track is an acoustic version of ‘Hand Of God’, one of the standout tracks from the superb Marked for Death it’s another gem.

In all honesty this was our first exposure to Jaye Jayle, and its impressive stuff. Perhaps the press release sums it up best… Though possessing a distinct Southern filter, Jaye Jayle’s stripped-back noir in fact owes more to Krautrock than the blues, while Evan Patterson’s baritone croon brings to mind Angels of Light-era Michael Gira. Jaye Jayle unsurprisingly count Spacemen 3, Neu!, and Lungfish among their varied influences, while arriving at a sound wholly unusual in the American underground. To make that a more accessible, how about Seasick Steve with a smattering of Kraftwerk? ‘About Time You Came To Me’ throbs and burns with a latent aggression, feeling like it should explode, yet it self-restrains and bubbles against the groove. ‘Unnecessarily’ finds Patterson channelling his inner Iggy Pop over a rhythm made menacing by its sheer unwillingness to break form. Closer ‘Hope Faith County’ is hypnotic and assured. Accomplished and captivating.

Get reacquainted with Emma Ruth Rundle and introduced to Jaye Jayle.

(via Alt Dialogue)
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/45815872017-02-08T09:09:16-08:002017-02-08T09:11:31-08:00Jaye Jayle releases new track "Unnecessarily" via BrooklynVegan

This deal follows the release of their excellent debut full-length, 2016’s House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get
Out, in addition to extensive U.S. touring this
past year with the likes of Daughters, Freakwater, Sumac, and others.

Now, Jaye Jayle have announced a string of of
shows in the midwest / east coast this January with Cloakroom and, following
the tour’s completion, the release of a six-song split E.P. with Sargent House label mate
Emma Ruth Rundle. Titled The Time Between Us,
this split features three songs from each artist and will be available February
24th, 2017.

Formed in 2013, Jaye Jayle are veterans
of Kentucky’s dark indie scene. Naming themselves as a pen name or a
pseudonym to veer away from a traditional band moniker, the group sought to
eliminate unnecessary variables and deconstruct their compositions down to
their most concentrated essence. Jaye
Jayle owe less to our nation’s roots music and more to
peripheral rock bands that have taken the “less is more” attitude to its
furthest reaches. Their music is an exercise in tension and restraint, a
tightrope act between singer-songwriter traditions and art rock
experimentation, and an intersection of Southern cultural permutations and
otherworldly sounds.

2017 will be an exciting year for Jaye Jayle - more news

His then-partner was in grad school in Santa Fe, and on frequent visits to see her, without a car or much to do, he wrote songs.

Patterson, who spoke to City Paper over the phone from his home in Louisville, Ky., has been playing in bands since he was a young teen, and is probably best known as the frontman for long-running post-punk band Young Widows. He’s no stranger to songwriting. But this felt different. “I was just … writing songs on a guitar that could barely play,” he says with a slow, subtle drawl. “I was writing songs with no direction or purpose.”

Those songs, haphazardly born from Southwestern landscapes and boredom, spawned a new musical project, Jaye Jayle, whose haunting debut full-length, House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out, was released in February.

A name like that may inspire some speculation — who is Jaye Jayle? A band or a man? And it’s both, sort of. What started out as a solo project with a name inspired by the often-amusing pseudonyms adopted by old blues artists is now a full band. It’s a shift which came about as organically as the songs: Once Patterson’s friends heard what he’d been working on, they were eager to help him flesh it out. The lineup has undergone changes since then, but more recently has settled into something steadier, and “more productive,” Patterson says.

Young Widows fans will likely listen for musical overlap, but while both projects showcase Patterson’s rich vocals (Leonard Cohen and Captain Beefheart have become major influences in recent years), Jaye Jayle swaps Young Widow’s noisy, melodic aggression for menacing, slow-burning minimalism. House Cricks brings to mind The Firstborn Is Dead-era Nick Cave, or dark alt-country band 16 Horsepower, and a cursory listen suggests connections to ’80s goth and Americana. “With Young Widows there was a lot of teen angst, and the punk-rock [idea of] going against anything and everything,” he says. “And I still feel like that’s there with any music I make because I’m never trying to fit into any pop-culture world … that’s never been inspiring to me.”

There’s a lot buried under Jaye Jayle’s deceptively simple songs, and much to be revealed through close listening. “I’ve been obsessed with blues music for a long time, and also ambient music like Tangerine Dream,” Patterson says. And he’s not afraid of experimentation: A couple of weeks ago, he organized the first and only performance of a project he called TRAMALANDA, which featured 10 people playing hi-hats, while Patterson played a tremolo-effected synthesizer. “In a lot of old country, or even jazz, there’s that subtle tremolo effect … whenever I hear that, I really cling to a song.” And though that was a one-off, it exemplifies a deep love and curiosity for all kinds of sounds, as well as resistance to categorization. “I’ve never had the desire to be pegged down, because that’s not what kind of fan I am of music,” he explains. “A genre of music is not my identity as an artist or as a fan.”

(via City Paper)
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/45537022016-10-19T15:25:00-07:002017-01-17T15:25:23-08:00Leo Weekly reviews House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out

There is a quiet seething barely contained on the newest from Jaye Jayle that creates a sense of brooding tension that never lets up. What Jaye Jayle do so well is to play in that place where the storm is always about to crash down, where the moment is always imminent. There is a visceral sort of country or folk twang here informed by the indie ambient musings of Jaye Jayle helmsman Evan Patterson that evokes a kind of Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave feel, that quiet and icy cool where you can practically taste the tobacco hanging in the air, the smoke a screen between audience and listener. This is cinematic stuff perfect for the sort of modern western that someone like Nicolas Winding Refn might direct, and it’s pitch perfect.

(via Leo Weekly)

Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/45537242016-10-17T15:55:00-07:002017-01-17T15:51:53-08:00House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out review // Never Nervous

by Phillip Olympia

After releasing a series of seven-inch records, Evan Patterson’s solo vehicle Jaye Jayle has at last unveiled a comprehensive, complete record. While I certainly liked the idea of a collective group of singles being put together to form a complete album, for whatever reason this new offering feels like a vision fully realized. Spanning nine songs, House Cricks and Other Reasons to Get Out gives you seven new tunes along with two re-recorded (and somewhat rearranged) tracks from the previous series.

Before delving into my thoughts on this record, I must say that it is a bit ironic how I initially digested each song. It is my understanding that a chunk of these songs were written by Evan while spending time in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Coincidentally, I bought this album right before I headed west to… you guessed it: Sante Fe, New Mexico. Before leaving I made sure to quickly add the digital download to my iPod to ensure I’d get the chance to properly consume this record inside the same geographic location as it was created. Being familiar with the previously released music from Jaye Jayle clued me in that this brand of cinematic, folksy indie rock would only enhance my time in the desert, and as it turns out, I was right. I’m not saying that this is the only way to properly take in this album, but damn, it absolutely made my initial experience more than memorable.

After pressing play, the first thing I noticed was Patterson’s low, gruff voice, with a sort of narrative delivery reminiscent of some of Leonard Cohen‘s more recent work. For me, the vocals are what keep me coming back to this record. Where Young Widows is primarily driven by dynamic, post-hardcore guitar riffs and beefy, distorted bass lines, Jaye Jayle is a completely different animal as a much more vocally driven operation. No songs are technically complex with each one invoking a broad, cinematic experience.

For me, one of the qualities that makes Jaye Jayle so alluring is the mystery. What is the name about? What exactly is he talking about? Admittedly, I have no idea. What I do know is that this record plays out like a soundtrack set behind a couple of folks up to no good. Maybe burying a body in the desert. Maybe hatching a sinister plan. Who knows. There’s a dark, malevolent overtone that broods through the majority of the album that I absolutely love, especially heard on “Miss Paranoia,” a creepy, bluesy take that you’d probably see on the juke box at The Titty Twister on From Dusk Till Dawn. Another standout is “Sugar Ran Wilde,” a song that revolves around a slow-grooving Joe Lally inspired bass line decorated by light keys and acoustic guitar.

In short, I can’t recommend House Cricks and Other Excuses to Get Out more, as it has quickly become one of my favorite releases of the year.
