They’ve had a busy year, touring with Baroness, another UK tour and not to mention Ruadhan’s solo project Magic Pockets. Next year they are playing Roadburn, which will be fucking amazing! I checked in with Ruadhan to check out what the fuck is happening over the Irish sea.

(((o))): Hi Ruadhan, how are you?

In top form! Getting ready for the final NSB show of the year in the Grand Social, Dublin. Our buds Crowhammer are playing too, they are awesome, kind of a cross between OM and Circle or something.

(((o))): Fuck it, I’m just going to ask it, how the hell do you pronounce Ruadhan?

The official pronunciation is ROO-ON, but I’ll take whatever’s going!

(((o))): You toured with Baroness this year, how the hell was that?

It was only fantastic! A perfect opportunity for us really… The band and their crew are a great bunch of lads, and we got to do our thing in some pretty big rooms in front of lots of people! We got to play some places such as Southampton and Birmingham, which we hadn’t made it to before. People seemed pretty receptive to what we were doing, which was great, as a synth-based outfit like ourselves is probably not what people are expecting when they go to a Baroness show!

(((o))): You also did a mini tour of the UK, how the hell was that?

Also Brillo! We are only lately getting to see what is going on all round the UK, all the great scenes/collectives/venues and bands that co-exisit and support each other. In particular we really were impressed by what the lads in CHUNK in Leeds have got going on. We were genuinely impressed by all the bands we got to play with or hear on that tour, Human Certainty, Super Luxury, Bruxa Maria, Casual Sect, and the Power-Bill at SMASH IT OUT!

(((o))): When I think of the music scene in Dublin I think of brutal metal! Bands like Altar of Plagues, Malthusian and Zom. Tell us a bit more about the scene in Dublin and how No Spill Blood fit into it?

The good thing about Dublin or Ireland in general is that there is lots and lots going on. There are quality acts operating in all different genres, types of music etc.. it leads to a fairly open and expansive community. There’s plenty of awesome metal acts, like the ones you mentioned, Crowhammer and Molossus are two pretty sweet hefty noise outfits, Cholera House does dark, intense electronica. The new Fixity LP, which is proper krautrock/psych/jazz is simply amazing.

(((o))): What plans do you have for your solo project Magic Pockets?
Well, I just released an LP on PENSKE, (a great label from Cork, who have released Fixity, Woven Skull & Altered Hours). It was great to finally get it out, as I have been sitting on that record for a Few years. Id like to do some more shows (possibly in the UK) and get stuck into some new recordings, as I kind of have a stockpile of material at this stage!

(((o))): What was the best gig you played in 2016?

It was a great experience to play KOKO with Baroness, but it has to be said that we had more fun playing SMASH IT OUT in the Windmill – which featured Matt’s first and probably only ever crowd surf! (He’s a big bastard)

(((o))): Best gig you attended?

I got to see Eternal Champion and Sumerlands double release show, both records are outstanding!

(((o))): Best festival?

Didn’t attend any festivals this year, something which I intend to rectify in 2017!

(((o))): What albums released from 2016 have you enjoyed?

Eternal Champion, Sumerlands, Sumac, Exploded View, Jenny Hval, Psalm Zero, Syrinx,Mike & the Melvins, Kaitlyn Aurelia-smith /Suzanne Ciani, Torturess, Skeleton$, The Body – to name a few!

(((o))): What the hell are you up to next year?

Finish writing LP at the start of the year, play Roadburn ( fucking YES!!!) and tour a bit, record in summer hopefully and release later on in the year!

Via Echoes and Dust.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/44687732016-11-15T11:38:37-08:002022-05-24T08:34:39-07:00No Spill Blood To Play Roadburn Festival

Joining the already impressive roster for John Dyer Baizley’s curated event on Saturday, April 22 at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands is No Spill Blood. This Irish act’s fusion of muscular, sludgy punk energy and swirling synthesizer noise makes for triumphant, instantly memorable songs that defy easy categorization.

While “synths plus guitars” could easily make for a gimmick, No Spill Blood transcends obvious cash grabs to create music that is impassioned and forceful in its hypnotic bludgeoning, making them sure to be on the must-see list for many unsuspecting attendees at this year’s Roadburn. With a driving sense of creative inertia guiding their high energy performance, this trio will impress and entrance even the most jaded listener.

For more on their inclusion, we’ll let John explain his excitement:

“My next announcement for Roadburn 2017 is a band who thoroughly blew me away when I toured with them early this year in the UK: No Spill Blood. I have always sought to keep the bands I tour with as diverse as possible, owing primarily to the fact that many of the greatest musical discoveries I’ve made as a show-goer have been a result of watching those supporting bands, opening for larger acts, who exist well outside the perceived musical realm of the headliners.”

“Those artists who subvert the notion that more-popular bands must tour with similar sounding support acts. In fact, often these surprise discoveries eclipse the potency of the headliner, because we, as ticket buyers, generally know what we’re getting ourselves into with bands whose catalogues we are already familiar with. Enter No Spill Blood, who I discovered based on an incredible live performance video I discovered while researching UK-based acts. The music was not only played incredibly well, with all the gusto, bravura and density of more typical “heavy” bands, but most noticeably it was done WITHOUT the traditional setup.”

“In lieu of guitars, this trio used synthesizers, which were not only competitive against the more standard template, but in some ways allowed extrapolation, evolution, and improvement on the familiar sound. In less capable hands, the notion of a three-piece synth-driven heavy-rock/hardcore band could have led to a huge misstep in execution and presentation; but No Spill Blood had found a format that worked so well, the specifics of their setup are rendered irrelevant.”

“We don’t need to critique instrumentation, if the sound is as glorious and powerful as this, nor do we care if the songs are well made and played with an earnest passion. The simple truth is, they’ve written great songs, and I can emphatically vouch for their live show, as I am fortunate enough to have been their tour-mate for a week or two. Trust me, guitars alone do not a heavy band make. Get your earplugs ready.”

No Spill Blood will play at Roadburn 2017 on Saturday, April 22 at Het Patronaat in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Roadburn Festival 2017 will take place April 20-23 at the 013 venue, Tilburg, The Netherlands. Tickets are now on sale!

&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href=“http://nospillblood.bandcamp.com/album/heavy-electricity”&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Heavy Electricity by No Spill Blood&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;
Via Roadburn.
Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/44499282016-11-02T14:42:31-07:002024-02-11T03:34:25-08:00No Spill Blood in Metal Injection’s Top 10 Artist That Blend Metal With Other Genres

Electronica has come a long way since its formation, with equipment now able to emulate guitars synthetically.
In Heavy Electricity, Dublin synth-metal bruisers No Spill Blood have crafted one of the most sonically-arresting records of 2015.

Claustrophobic and intense, the trio’s full-length debut proper (following 2012’s Street Meat EP) turns promise and potential into a powerhouse wall of delicious dark noise, all without the assist of a traditional guitar. To be fair, they don’t need the six-string. In its place; war drums, guttural howls, beautifully distorted bass tones and, crucially, a vintage synthesizer sound that lends a very specific sense of time and place.

We caught up with Ruadhan O’Meara [pictured above right], the man behind that last particular aspect, to talk Heavy Electricity, horror, the departure of drummer Lar Kaye and guilty pleasures…

There’s a strong classic horror film vibe on Heavy Electricity, especially Goblin’s work on the Suspiria soundtrack and some vintage John Carpenter. Was that something you purposefully set out to evoke?

Yeah, absolutely. We are all obsessed with old movie and TV soundtracks, horror ones in particular. Goblin and John Carpenter would be the obvious ones, along with Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, Fabio Frizzi, etc. There’s something about the sustained tension and dreamlike uneasiness that lends itself to heavy music well. Horror and Metal have always been intrinsically linked, down to the musical intervals used, the “Diabolus in Musica” etc.

On that note, do you have any particular favourite film soundtracks? If so, why?

Halloween III definitely stands out to me, as I love the sounds of the old sequential circuits gear used, the unsettling patterns and stabs etc. The Phantasm soundtrack by Myrow and Seagrave is amazing, the main theme in its many variations never fails to upset me. I’m also a big fan of The Shout by Tony Banks and Mick Rutherford. Crazy film, and the music supplied by the two Genesis boys is bonkers and works really well without resorting to regular horror tropes. Sometimes just an awesome selection of tracks works really well, Manhunter being an excellent example. Klaus Schulze, Red 7, Prime Movers etc really set the neon tone for the film, and the genius usage of ‘IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA’ blew me away when I saw the film for the first time. Recently there have been a load of great soundtracks to newer genre movies, such as The Duke of Burgundy, It Follows, The Guest, Cold in July, Under the Skin, etc. I always appreciate when there is effective and interesting music used in film, it can really breathe life into an otherwise dull script!

The press release for Heavy Electricity describes “an elemental pilgrimage emerging from the bowels of the earth, only to encounter savage environments, altered states, and the brutal inhumanity of fellow men.” What, if anything specifically, influenced this way of thinking?

Well, the record is designed to flow in a particular manner, and Matt’s lyrics mirror this in certain ways. He usually concocts images and scenarios to reflect the tone of the music and strings a narrative out of them all. Kind of a reverse situation to someone soundtracking a movie I guess!

Lyrically, has Matt ever come up with anything that shocked you?

He’s a deeply, deeply disturbed man – and though what he generally comes out with would be shocking to most, we are well used to it! There’s a synergy there at work.

How do you feel Heavy Electricity differs from Street Meat?

Street Meat being our first effort, was simply a collection of the first songs we wrote. It was also rushed to a degree – we were still in the stages of finding our feet and deciding what we were all about. This time round we definitely had a bit more time to craft and shape the record, along with developing the writing processes we outlined while doing the first ep. We also had a bit more time to experiment, and try some weirder stuff out.

Sonically, things are pretty huge. Production-wise, it feels like you wanted to create a near-claustrophobic atmosphere where listeners find themselves in the same room as the band.

Yeah, the coupling of the heavy mono-synth lines with the bass riffs tend to create a wall of low end.. To counteract this, we really went for a much “roomier” and live drum sound, to lift the kit over the heft. Rian and Scan, who recorded the album, also ran everything through a multitude of different amps at once, the tones of which were blended together as necessary. This really fills up the sound, but as there are a lot of amps pushing air it gives you that live in a room feeling, as opposed to things sounding like they are run straight in to a computer, which we really wanted to avoid.

Are people ever surprised that No Spill Blood don’t feature a traditional guitar?

Constantly! Obviously people just automatically expect a guitar in any heavy set up, but what’s particularly weird is even after seeing us play, some people have asked where the guitar player was hidden on stage, as if they could hear someone playing…

We ran a feature recently discussing the state of guitar music and whether or not it’s dead, dying or stagnant. It’s an argument that continues to crop up even in the face of exciting new music. As a band that eschews that traditional guitar approach, where do you stand on it?

Yeah, it was definitely a move we made, but just because it suited us. It’s not like a major stance or anything. Our initial jams featured guitar, but we thought having synths the whole time would be more interesting. It’s something we may even re-introduce at some stage, in fact we all laid down subtle guitar tracks (feedback, etc) on the record.

The synth sound is quite vintage. Did you employ a bunch of analogue synthesizers or have you perfected one at this point?

We used a tonne of different synths on the record, mostly vintage analogue ones I have acquired over the years. Every old synth has a unique quality of some sort to it. Even though you might have two similar monosynths for example, even the slightest difference in components or architecture can set them apart quite a bit. It was a dream to have all this gear set up in a proper studio, running through amps etc. and be able to select a particular synth for whatever line or effect it suited. Live though, I use a Sequential Pro-One and Six trak. I have used these both from the start with NSB, and I know their ins and outs pretty well at this stage.

Lar Kaye was a key part of the band and he recorded the drums on Heavy Electricity but departed before the album’s release. Was this something you knew in advance of recording? What was your reaction to finding out?

We all kind of knew going in that at some stage his other project ALL TVVINS was going to take off in a big way, and that eventually he would not be able to keep playing in both bands (not to mention Adebisi Shank!). Luckily enough, we got to track and finish off the LP completely before that became an issue. At that point we were all just happy that we got to complete the project. The timing was perfect, really.

Now in his place, what dynamic does Ror Conaty bring to the band?

Ror is an old friend of ours, and a phenomenal drummer. I had played with him in a band a few years back, and was the first person we called when we knew there would be a vacancy on the drum stool. Luckily for us he was well up for it! We didn’t have to spend ages auditioning people or anything. Ror totally gets it, and we were rehearsing within a few days.

How was it touring with Deafheaven?

Great! We did three dates with them, and was the first time we got to see them since Sunbather came out. It was particularly eye-opening to see a band play with that level of tightness and intensity night after night, they totally have it down. I really enjoyed watching them soundcheck, as they would rip in to the mid section of a song but be so precise. Nice bunch of lads too, its always great to play with members of the extended Sargent House clan!

What’s the guiltiest pleasure song on your iPod?

That’s a tough one! There are people that would count stuff like Phil Collins, Prefab Sprout or Michael McDonald as guilty pleasures, but that to me is total insanity! Maybe we are in to some seriously perverse shit, but I guess ‘Good Life’ by Inner City might be one that gets played in the van a lot that might surprise people.

7 Days and nights of tracking got Heavy Electricity onto tape and this is how it happened. Deaf Bros are truly buzzed to be part of this record. “It was our pleasure to work on this with all involved, especially the lade from No Spill Blood, Cathy and everyone at Sargent House.”

Ireland’s vitalic rock scene has once again created musical alchemy in the form of No Spill Blood. A band formed from the much-loved, respected and established bands Wizards Of Firetop Mountain, Hands Up Who Wants To Die?, Elk and Magic Pockets.

The band’s shared love of Devo’s smarmy synths, Trans Am’s rhythmic soundscapes and the Melvins’ unencumbered experimentalism brought them together to create a beastly noise using just vocals, bass, synths and drums.

No Spill Blood’s debut EP Street Meat was released via Sargent House in 2012. Thereafter, the trio quickly grew from side project to a full fledged band. They hit the studio in early 2014 with original drummer Lar Kaye to capture the raw, eviscerating experience of its live show for Heavy Electricity. Powerhouse drummer Ror Conaty replaced Kaye shortly before NSB toured Ireland with Sargent House family band Deafheaven in August 2014, their reinvigorated live show receiving considerable praise in the process.

We were very honoured to have captured this epic performance for the Parlour.

They come at you like a herd of buffalo snorting and charging with thunderous rhythms, full-on aggression and taking no prisoners in the process. There is no let down, no chance to catch your breath. There are also no guitars. Just vocals, bass, drums and synths. But the noise they produce is as heavy as any metal band around. There’s always a chance that something this kitschy could fall flat on its face. After all, this has been done before (Death From Above 1979?). The bass guitar serves as a lead instrument in that it is riff-heavy. Singer/bass player Matt Hedigan growls and groans in a post-hardcore voice that gives No Spill Blood a slasher movie soundtrack feel. Other tracks such as “Back To The Earth” recall Red Fang in their ability to take simple riffs and run with them. All three members of No Spill Blood are scene vets and this helped them procure none other than Mike Watt from Minutemen fame for a vocal turn on “Now II.” It’s the longest song here and also the scariest. A krautrock beat from drummer Lar Kaye accompanies Ruadhan O’Meara’s octave-loving keyboards in an orgy of brutal techno-metal.(Note: Kaye has since been replaced by Ror Conaty.). I can’t help thinking of Killing Joke at their manic best. Also present are undertones of Italian Prog band Goblin – a band ,fittingly enough, known primarily for their horror movie soundtracks.
Unsurprisingly, there’s some Black Sabbath homage thrown into the mix. “Harsh Route” is the best song not recorded for Master Of Reality I’ve probably ever heard. It’s catchy and dirty in all the right ways. It’s the clear-cut winner of the bunch and has been on repeat on my iPod for days. To be perfectly honest, not every song here is of equal quality. “El Duurto” is perhaps a bit too crazed for its own good and “Thinner” attempts some progressive metal moves that don’t quite ring true but they are the exception. By the time we get to the instrumental closing track, “Endless Drift,” it’s clear that a lot of energy has been expended listening to this beast. I’m exhausted after the third or fourth track. This is not music for the faint of heart.

I got hip to this band after their solid EP Street Meat hit in 2012 but this is a step up in every conceivable way. The production is solid, the songs are good and they get the creepy-as-fuck vibe just about on point. They are a guitar band without guitars. A heavy band without being metal. A band of odd restraint in spite of their lunatic soul.
Sargent House are not only one of the best labels in the current musical landscape IMHO, they seem to have unearthed a “scene” of sorts in Ireland that can boast some of the most exciting things happening in the future of punk music. First they signed two very unique (even from each other) bands; Adebisi Shank (whose bassist I interviewed here) and And So I Watch You From Afar. Equally good, yet just as singular and isolated stylistically, No Spill Blood have just put a new record of bass and synth driven punk that really rips.

The aptly titled Heavy Electricity is on Youtube, seemingly in it’s entirety thanks to the aforementioned label and you’re going to want to check it out. Now when I say synth and bass I’m not talking about some easy-way-out new-school garbage, this record is brimming with dirt and a violent punk energy. The bass is constantly fuzzed-out and unrelenting (it sounds like he’s torturing a P-bass), the synths are old-school and analogue-sounding, the drums are au naturale and furious, and the vocals are the tortured/methed-out icing on the cake. And the riffs…oh yes the riffs will induce much head-banging. There are a lot of things you could be doing this St. Patrick’s Day, but wouldn’t you rather be celebrating some of the best music coming out of the Emerald Isle?

Hallelujah. From the first seconds of this debut album proper from Dublin-based trio No Spill Blood onwards, there’s no diversion from the memo sent down from rock’s mission control, electrifying senses from somewhere in the thunderclouds. Hit hard, riff righteously, and get all weird and sci-fi on the keys now and again: the system works. Hell, it does much more than merely work – it makes a man feel inches taller, one’s pace quicker, their blood hotter.

Heavy Electricity’s opening shots of ‘White Out’ and ‘Back To The Earth’ set a tremendous, turbulent precedent for the rest of this nine-cut collection to follow in the crust-cracking bootprints of. That it does is indicative of experience beyond “new band” status – while this is a first long player for No Spill Blood, members have done their share of gear-lugging and road-slogging in acts like Adebisi Shank and the (excellently named) Hands Up Who Wants To Die? They know how to thread consistency through an album, and do so expertly here.

So while the early impression of Torche forming a supergroup with Teeth Of The Sea at a hundred leagues deep in the Atlantic as Jimmy Cameron scouts locations for an Abyss sequel is Pretty Fucking Impressive, what’s even better is that the album doesn’t let your cynical, sourpuss self surface for so much as a microsecond. There’s no opportunity for pondering what might have been, no lamenting a strong start giving way to a bloated middle and a wuss-out climax, as it just keeps coming, with the impact of a megaton bomb inside your bathroom cabinet.

Okay, so there’s possibly some overreaching enthusiasm coming through here. It might be that Heavy Electricity isn’t the iPod-hogging beast it is today come the summertime. But then, it’s a record that gives off such an intense heat that its presence beneath a low, cold sun is essential for chasing away the chill of a heels-dragging winter. It might feel like a sticky mess in July, when all anyone wants is those shit, tasteless “French-style” beers you get handed around at barbeques and whatever pop’s been branded This Year’s Model by a press guaranteed to turn at least a handful of cheese hawkers into honorary members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, for services to Just Being Different Enough. But right now is when I’m writing these words, so: consider them sincere, but subject to seasonal variation.

Right now, when I hear ‘Now II’ I’m lifted off my feet and given, for the solid duration of six minutes and 49 seconds, superpowers. X-ray eyes. Laser fingers. Hulk strength. Master Builder skills that knock Morgan Freeman into next week. Great in bed: as in, that regular four hours of sleep becomes the equivalent of eight, so I’m not the wreck of a man I appear most working days. Those “Colin achieved this entirely routine thing today, and now he feels epic” adverts with that Patrick Stewart (aping?) voiceover are a right crock, I know, but: this track and more does make me feel like I’ve just beaten down an army of angry internet nerds with nothing but balloon animals –sea lions, mainly– and a rolled-up copy of Amiga Power from 1994. Totally epic.

And absolutely unbeatable: for ‘Now II’ and what’s come before it; and then throughout ‘Thinner’, which is a bit like an entire Botch album crushed into one song and remixed by a retro-futurist electro-head watching the opening city sweep of Blade Runner on an endless loop at an IMAX on the surface of Mercury. And then throughout ‘Harsh Route’, which is the swaggering machismo of Queens Of The Stone Age dipped in razor-edged microchips with the black-hole weight of the Melvins and swung into the gurning mugs of lagered-up Kasabian fanboys. And then throughout the unstoppable charge of ‘Sweet Beans’, a track packing bass grooves so battery-lick buzzing that it turns your nipples inside out and uses them as birdfeeders for Laserbeak’s robotic brood, shitting burned-out capacitors all over your naked navel. You get the idea. Heavy Electricity is like someone made my favourite spaceships-and-stuff shooter of the 16bit video game era into a metal album – probably Xenon 2 Megablast, since you asked, but only because I abused the cheats and was shite at the superior R-Type II.

I really like this record. And if any of the above made the slightest shred of sense to you, you will too. Until your soggy pants are crawling up your arsecrack and you’d murder a child(’s favourite plushie) for a Calippo, at least. But come on: this is Britain, where summer lasts for two weeks, giving you 50 to cherish the company of one of the most brilliant rock records to blast forth from the British Isles in bloody ages.

The tracks on their new album, Heavy Electricity, vary from plodding rhythm sections that build up momentum and layers of ethereal sounds before violently cascading into astral pandemonium (“Now II” and “White Out”), to songs that put the probe up your ass faster than the craftiest of extraterrestrials (“El Duurto”), to tracks where the synths are doing all the flexing, sending your brain onto a space mission into the most phantasmagorical and psychedelic of galaxies (“Heavy Electricity” and “Endless Drift”).

It is hard to categorize this band, which is generally a good thing, and this makes No Spill Blood’s sound accessible to a variety of audiences, ranging from metal to noise-rock, space rock, post hardcore, etc. I recommend Heavy Electricity to anyone that is in the mood for something heavy that isn’t your run of the mill.

Here is an interview with No Spill Blood’s synth player Ruadhan O’Meara.

B.G.M. – Tell us about the history of No Spill Blood and the themes/influences on Heavy Electricity.

Ruadhan O’Meara: We are a synth/bass/drums trio from Dublin, Ireland formed in late 2011. OurStreet Meat,EP, was released on Sargent House in 2012, and we are about to release our first LP onMarch 10.

This record Heavy Electricity draws from a collective pool of influences from music, movies, books, comics and stuff we all dig. Stuff like Six Finger Satellite, the Screamers, the Melvins, John Carpenter movies, Preacher, Button Men, H.P. Lovecraft etc. It’s main themes are isolation, violence, altered states, and general cosmic malaise.

How has the writing process and band dynamic changed in the years between Street Meat and the new album?

The new record is kind of an extrapolation of the creative processes we outlined while making Street Meat. It’s a combination of homework and ideas gleaned from hours of endless jamming.

How is the current music scene in Dublin? I keep hearing awesome bands coming out of there such as yourselves, Wölfbait, and Adebisi Shank–any other bands you guys are in or recommend?

There are always new and interesting bands to check out in Dublin. Wölfbait and Adebisi are favourites of ours, but also bands like Twinkranes, Malthusian, Percolator, Dread Sovereign, Guilty Optics, and Wild Rocket are ones that come to mind who are doing great things at the moment.

What are your favorite cities to play in? Any good tour stories?

Lausanne, Switzerland was one place we made it to we all really enjoyed playing. The Venue Le Romandie was great, we had a flat tire and the staff really went out of their way to help us get sorted. Trying to negotiate with mechanics the following day using our miserable pigeon French was quite an ordeal though..

Will you be touring the United States soon? Any cities here you are excited about playing?

We are hoping to get over there soon, and we’re buzzing to play everywhere and anywhere. Texas is one place in particular we’d like to make it to.

The recording itself is formidable and heavy. Where did you guys record and master Heavy Electricity?

The LP was recorded in this great studio “The Meadow” in Wicklow, by the DEAF BROS (Rian Trench and Scan). They did an awesome job of capturing the heft, it was a great experience. We did go completely batshit crazy in the studio though, after our 3’rd or 4th 20 hour session in a row. The record was then mastered by T.J. Lipple of Aloha.

Who did the album artwork?

The cover art was done by Samantha Muljat. We loved the cover she did for EARTH last year, so we were chuffed she could do something for us..

Any plans for a music video in the near future? Your songs are begging for one!

We recently filmed a video here, which was a live session but with some added cinematic flourishes… it’ll be up soon. It would be great to do a proper concept video, with loads of Savini-esque effects and that kind of thing. Next time!

There is a hint of Goblin and John Carpenter to your sound; both seem to have a penchant for wearing turtleneck sweaters. Is this something that you guys are considering adding to your onstage performance-outfits?

No Spill Blood are definitely pro – turtle neck. In their most recent release from their upcoming LPHeavy Electricity, the metal vets (featuring members of Elk and Adebisi Shank) kick the doors down with “Harsh Route.” John Carpenter-like buzzsaw synths grind over the thick guitars, an appropriate backdrop for bassist/singer Matt Hedigan’s guttural howl.
Fact: the world needs more Killing Joke, and the world needs more bands to realize that the world needs more Killing Joke. No Spill Blood takes Six Finger Satellite and the spazzy noise of Arab of Radar and puts it through that sick, unrelenting Jaz Coleman sieve, resulting in the new burner of a track “El Duurto” streaming here for the first time. Shit is nuts, but make sure to turn it down before you hit play; sounds this caustic, muscular, and acidic probably should be eased into. Or just turn it on high and fry the shit out of your brain.
…”We’re here for two bands affiliated with Sargent House, the first of which is Dublin’s No Spill Blood. At least, it’s two-thirds of No Spill Blood, because drummer Lar Kaye is absent, replaced by Ror Conaty of Veroa and Wizards of Firetop Mountain fame. Such is No Spill Blood’s emphasis on rhythm, you may think a change of drummer is cause for concern, but Conaty is solid and dynamic, a blur of curly hair with a penchant for wild-eyed grimaces.

No Spill Blood have antecedents – their mechanical synth/bass/drums attack brings to mind Kling Klang, Zombie Zombie and fellow Dubliners Legion of Two – but their sound is singular and, just as Deafheaven nearly stole the show with Russian Circles two years ago, No Spill Blood aren’t far off doing the same thing here. Ruadhan O’Meara’s synth work is beautifully conceived, painting the songs with retrofuturistic colour and a sinister, dystopian mood, while Matt Hedigan is clearly having fun with his bass pedals, wringing all manner of weird noises out of his instrument. With this band, though, rhythm is king and as Conaty and Hedigan get busy with their robotic, heavy grooves, the cumulative effect over the course of a set is hypnotic and, ultimately, cathartic. It’s a thoroughly convincing performance from a band on top of their game.”

See Full Show Review here at THUMPED

It’s the end of the current tour for Fang Island, who have been doing the rounds over the preceding weeks aided and abetted by No Spill Blood. Hailing from Rhode Island, Fang Island specialize in a type of infectious, no frills guitar music that marks them out as the greatest band on earth. Okay, they’re not the greatest band on earth, but they might well be the most enjoyable band to rock out to on your headphones. The band’s ethos is simple – create the sound of “everyone high-fiving everyone.” While we have no idea how this might sound, if it’s measured through musical notation then this is probably it.

The three-pronged sonic assault that is No Spill Blood takes the stage, and from the alarm tone synth of Good Company it’s a heavy, molten slab of Death From Above 1979 style noise. Drummer Lar Kaye is a hard-hitter, and he and the howling vocal and bass of Matt Hedigan provide the basis for Ruadhan O’ Meara to layer on the colour with his dense synth patterns. It’s a full room from the first notes, as the band tear through the ‘Street Meat’ material, with the synth elevating things, swirling around the venue and grounding back on the solid work of the rhythm section. Crowd surfers are hoyed out of the air by bouncers, but the atmosphere is never anything less than cheerful. Bodies pump in rhythm, and when the band kicks back in after the prog-y breakdown of New Tricks a sea of heads simultaneously rock back and forth on their hinges. A false ending winds down the set, Buckfast makes an appearance, and the band gear up once more to bring things to a conclusion. Go on, the Bucky...

See full Show Review here

Sargent Housetag:www.sargenthouse.com,2005:Post/36678842013-05-09T11:51:47-07:002023-12-18T21:09:53-08:00Under Cover: An Interview with Sonny Kay the artist behind Street Meat's album cover

In the first of our regular features on the importance of cover artwork, Loreana Rushe talks to L.A based visual artist Sonny Kay about the work he did on Street Meat by No Spill Blood and gains some insight into his creative process and inspirations.

Hi Sonny. Tell us about this cover.

It’s a digital collage created in Photoshop from photos I found online as well as some textures I made on paper with india ink and water, which I then scanned.

Can you describe the process?

I began with the frame since I knew I wanted something that felt in some ways like a mandala, radiating out from the center. The other images were layered-in using Photoshop, some filters were applied here and there, and a lot of experimenting was done with transparency and muting certain color channels. It was all basically trial-and-error.

What inspired the artwork for this record?

The book cover the band sent me (HP Lovecraft) coupled with my own interpretation of the music and the vague concept of “street meat”. It sounded like slang for some kind of drug, which led to the idea of a kind of psychedelic meat snack, like beef jerky or something crossed with LSD. I was inspired to try and portray the moment when the hallucinations begin, hence the mandala and the kind of geometric quality.

How much say do bands have in the work you do for them?

It depends on the band and the project. Some have a lot of say, some are very hands-off. I always welcome their opinions since ultimately I’m trying to make them happy as much as myself.

Do you feel your art relates to the record?

Yes, I feel that way about every record cover I design.

What were your inspirations in terms of creating the work?

Well, I wasn’t given very much time, so I was inspired to work quickly, make quick decisions, and again, interpret what I heard in the band’s sound.

What has been your highlight so far in terms of your work?

That’s difficult to narrow down to one thing. Being associated with bands I respect and admire greatly is something that never loses its appeal.

Who are your favourite artists?

I’m discovering new ones all the time who blow my mind, particularly fine artists (painters, in particular). In terms of designers who I would consider my influences, then definitely Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis, Roger Dean, Gee Vaucher, Sam Chirnside, Peter Saville.

What’s your favourite album cover?

I don’t know if I have an all-time favorite but Squawk by Budgie (below) is high up on the list.

Are there any album covers that blow you away so much that you wish you could have made them?

Yes, thousands. Squawk, for starters. The Sky’s Gone Out by Bauhaus. The first three Peter Gabriel albums are almost like the holy grail for album design. All of these ideas are very, very simple, but those are usually the most successful.

Are there any bands you think are amazing but have terrible cover art?

I can’t say anything by Queens of the Stone Age has ever impressed me much, but the band is flawless. On the other hand, I think The Killers are terrible, but their cover art is usually great.

What would be your dream commission?

Some massive ad campaign that would put my finances into the black for a couple of years. Or maybe that’s my nightmare, haha.

What are you currently working on?

A new album for The Glitch Mob and a new DVD for Omar Rodriguez Lopez.

Any bands you’d like to work with in the future?

If I could pick five I’d say Tortoise, Tama Impala, The Horrors, Queens of the Stone Age, and… Pussy Riot.

Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War Of The Worlds might be the barometer in sci-fi musical epics, but No Spill Blood, with their other-worldly keyboard magic, thudding fuzz bass, outrageously great drumming and guttural vocals that could scare even the most feral of children play as if in the midst of a real intergalactic invasion.

Things to do before you die part 1, catch Dublin’s No Spill Blood playing live. Part 2 would be make sure you hear their debut e.p Street Meat. They made their Belfast debut last year and I didn’t make it then, managing to avoid the grim reaper I ventured out to see them in Bar Sub at Queen’s Union supporting fellow Sargent House rockers Fang Island. Street Meat has been on repeat play since I first heard it and to watch the band recreate every nuance of its incredible forceful and brutal sound was a joyous experience. Not every day you see brutal and joyous in the same sentence, that’s what No Spill Blood make you do, they’re utterly unique.

Featuring Matt Hedigan on Bass/Vocals, Ruadhan O’Meara on effects (I do not know the exact instrumentation he was playing) and the supremely talented and ridiculously moustachioed Lar Kaye on drums, these 3 guys give their absolute all in the quest to kill off what hearing I have left. Opening with the vicious ‘No Retreat’ initial attention is focused on Matt, a huge and hirsute man who twists out sinewy bass lines while bellowing blood curdling howls, the lyrics indecipherable. With the greatest respect, he looks like the sort of chap you wouldn’t want to be meeting down a dark alley. Probably a thoroughly decent bloke.

How do you follow this? Simple, you launch straight into Street Meat’s other highlight, the uber-funky ‘Junior’ which does to your gut what ‘No Retreat’ just did to your ears with its throbbing bass grooves and sequencer squelches. Then it happens…what the hell is going on mid-stage? There seems to be one amazing party-up session going on behind the drum kit where a man-octopus is liberally knocking seven shades of shite out of a very basic drum kit. Once he gets you transfixed, there is no stopping the compulsive viewing on offer. The crowd don’t do much in the way of dancing (though I really wanted to let loose, it’s been such a while!) but Lar Kaye is jiggling and shaking, twitching and flailing, posturing and preening, all while underpinning the extremely tight rhythms No Spill Blood generate. I don’t want to harp on about his facial hair, but my goodness, you have to see it twitch mid-air in the frenzy of his drumming.

There’s a few new tunes on offer tonight, didn’t catch their names, Matt’s thick mumbled accent offers little in the way of intelligible English. I want more recorded output to compliment the 6-track e.p they put out last year, if these tunes are anything to go by, I want them now. One featured the most brilliant winding bassline and spaced out freaky sounds, perfectly mixed and presented by seriously talented musicians.

The fact that a sweat drenched Lar Kaye popped off stage, put on a hat and got straight back up again to play bass with Fang Island should not go unnoticed. He also plays incredible guitar for Adebisi Shank, I seriously contemplated kidnapping him for my own personal studio bitch but then Matt strode past and I thought better of it.

You always know when a band are ones to watch when other bands who are ones to watch are in attendance. No Spill Blood. Remember, before you die…
