VINYL TO DIE FOR: EMMA RUTH RUNDLE SHOWS OFF PRIZED JESSIKA KENNEY & EYVIND KANG LP
"For her part, Emma Ruth Rundle — the solo artist also known for her work with Red Sparowes, Marriages and Thou — is just starting to build her record collection, having mostly lived out of a suitcase until the last three years. One of the foundational pieces of her incipient collection is the Jessika Kenney & Eyvind Kang LP The Face of the Earth. Get an up-close look."
Artists have been covering songs by Galaxie 500 all month in lead-up to the Record Store Day release of G500's live album, Copenhagen, on August 29. Today we get Mark Lanegan who teams with Earth's Dylan Carlson for a slightly grungy take on "Summertime," which was on Galaxie 500's final album, This is Our Music. Says Mark, "Dylan Carlson and I giving the garage treatment to one of my favorite songs by Galaxie 500, one of the all-time great bands." You can watch that, and compare with the original "Summertime," below.
Other artists who'd covered Galaxie 500 in the series include Thurston Moore, The Feelies' Glenn Mercer, Barbra Manning, The Natvral (Kip from Pains of Being Pure at Heart), and Circuit des Yeux's Haley Fohr, and there are still covers to come from Magnetic Fields, Real Estate and more.
Earlier this year, Mark Lanegan and Cold Cave covered Joy Division's "Isolation" in tribute to Ian Curtis, and Mark released new solo album Straight Songs of Sorrow in May.
The collaboration that Emma Ruth Rundle did with Thou grew into an album called MAY OUR CHAMBERS BE FULL. It will be released on 10//30/20 via Thou’s label Sacred Bones Records. Earlier this summer Brutus recorded ‘Distance’ as part of a TOUTPARTOUT live session on top of the ancient Fort Napoleon in Ostend, Belgium. Because of COVID-19 restrictions tickets were limited (100), people had to stay seated in their private bubble with 1,5 meters distance ... as you can see, that was a special show. All profit of the show will go to the LIVE2020 fund. This fund supports Belgian artists and crew in these hard times.
Brutus is also releasing their live record "Live In Ghent" due out Oct 23rd. Pre-order / Download / Stream: HERE
Visionary artist Jaye Jayle is celebrating the release of his new album Prisyn with a video for the album’s driving, winding single “A Cold Wind.” The clip, directed by Josh Ford, features unique textures and landscapes and creates an expressive visual component for the track. Evan Patterson comments: “‘A Cold Wind’ is about the painful infatuation that is love. Those moments of not being able to enjoy or take in the beauty of one’s surroundings without obsessive comparisons to that of a lover. Not lusting, but desiring for comfort, security, and calmness of another."
Prisyn is out everywhere now through Sargent House. Buy / Stream / Download: HERE
Under the Radar Presents: “Why Not Both” Podcast Featuring Ioanna Gika
We loved getting metaphysical with Ioanna Gika. From sharing how the nature of loss and grief informed her work to discussing the finer points of how to meow a violin line, Ioanna let us catch a glimpse of her particular form of sonic sorcery. Ultimately, it’s all about staying in the present moment to let the beauty of chaos reveal itself. Ioanna has a generous humanitarian side as well, sharing that all of the proceeds of Devendra Banhart’s cover of her track “Swan” go to the Downtown Women’s Shelter in Los Angeles.
While you listen, Ioanna requests that you learn more about Black Lives Matter and donate.
For more from Ioanna, stop by her Instagram and Twitter. You can also grab her debut solo album Thalassa at Bandcamp, and enjoy the haunting visuals for album single “Out of Focus.”
